Dooley exit plan being discussed

  • georgiavol said...

Although I am quite disappointed with our football performance the past few years, I would like to thank coach Dooley for his dedication and endless hours of hard work under very difficult circumstances. I would hope that everyone will allow him and his family to leave with dignity. I know that he has young children and I pray that the Tennessee family will not say anymore awful things that will hurt those children. I'm excited about a new beginning but at the same time I'm saddened that coach Dooley didn't win some games. Coach Dooley, thank you for your integrity and God bless you and your family.

    +1. Well said

  • If change is inevitable, let's do it as thoughtfully and quickly as possible, realizing that the future of the program should be the foremost concern. Holding a pretty solid recruiting class in place will be very important a couple of years down the road.

No win situation on the timing. Do it now, and you crush team morale and probably a shot at a bowl. Wait until the season ends and deal with all the speculation and rumor and angst as our recruits drop off like flies. This just blows. Cant believe this is happening. Again.

+1. It may sound negative, but it's also the 100% accurate reality of where we are right now. If someone is telling it like it is, it's really neither negative nor positive, because there's really no spin.

And in less objective news, perhaps the ghost of Gen. Neyland will appear to Jon Gruden in a dream . . . biggrin

  • I feel that I as well as many others have lost another battle. I've been a UT fan for over fifty years. My four years on the Hill are some of my fondest memories. Because of the character and class he brought to us, I feel very empty today. He and his family will survive and he will do well at whatever he choses. My prayers go with him. For me, he gave us his best and did so with honor and dignity. Some of us will miss him. I thank him for the young men and coaches of solid character he brought to our institution. God go with you Coach.

Man, I was really pulling for CDD. Sure liked his quotes and I think he embraced the Tennessee traditions. Sorry to see him go. But as they say, "we play to win the game".

    Absolutely AWESOME post. clap

You know, there's no questioning Coach Dooley's work ethic or dedication. He clearly improved the talent level, and even for those of us who now support the change that is happening, there is NEVER any call to personally attack a coach, and certainly not his family.

And I know I'm not talking about any members here, but any adult who would say something cruel to a young child about his or her father or mother deserves a special corner in hell for such cowardly behavior, IMO. I'd like to think no UT fan would ever do that, but unfortunately in my 45 years I've seen enough of the worst of people not to count on it.

  • CDD has definitely stabilized the program, recruited solid players and made us respectable., even without winning. Being able to win those close games and go to the next level will depend on our next hire. I am a Dooley supporter, but I agree its time to move on. We are Tenneessee and a Big hire is a must. No excuses. Make it happen University officials & Boosters. Now is the time.

No good way to do this.

Don't disagree in the least, but it certainly CAN be handled better than either of the last two times was. Hopefully, we will find out that Hart is a big upgrade over Hamilton in that regard.

Iam disappointed and sick of losing. Game management isnt the problem. 3rd and automatic is the problem. They, Dooley and company, got us scoring 36 points avg a game. A running game that hasnt carried us. Dooleys game management gave us 2 shots at winning at Georgia and 3 in 2 minutes at either SC or MS not sure which one, its all a blur. He can manage the game. The defense is the problem and it has killed us this year. Our offense hasnt been that great in years. I am a Dooley fan, because he is a class act and we havent had any embarrassing problems except getting beat. If they are going to let him go wait til the end of the year or give him one last year with these recruits. I guess everybody thought we would win the east with a bunch of 2 and three star recruits.

We have continually found different ways to lose games. No, I didn't think we should win the east, but yes I thought we should have won yesterday and against MSU with the players we have. 8-4 would not get him fired. It is his defense, his kicking game and his game management yesterday was inexcusable. No disrespect but I don't know how you can think he managed games well. He had his chance, he got me all excited about not having Tennessee to kick around anymore. We all really wanted him to succeed, wish him the best, but the quicker he is gone the sooner we can try to save some recruits, get some recruits and try to be significant again.

  • I've heard talk of tubberville as head coach and chizik as d coordinator. Also heard rumors of Charlie strong as head coach but it's all rumors

Concur. I loved his ethics and character, and the fact he cleaned up the thug issues that flourished under Kiffin, and during the end of the Fulmer era. He was Southern, he was SEC, and he was and is a good human being. There's no reason to wish him anything other than success in his future endeavors.

Some sad souls whose lives are totally dependent on their football teams winning for their own happiness, though, are so emotionally "pained" by their team losing, they somehow take it as a personal affront from the head coach when things go wrong, as if the coach was losing on purpose just to hurt them. These people just can't help but take potshots at the coach on his way out the door to make themselves feel better. Such individuals not only need more reason to live than football, but also grossly overestimate their own importance in the grand scheme of things.

I'll be saying a little prayer of my own for him tonight, too.

Georgia: I agree. We have to remember several things. Coach Dooley didn't short-arm a single pass, drop a sure TD, or let a 5'10" cornerback take his candy. He didn't shank any punts or miss any PAT's. He didn't miss a single tackle. He wasn't guilty of illegal procedure or unsportsmanlike conduct. Coach didn't fumble a single ball that I can recall. He didn't let a single receiver get behind him for an easy TD. We should all remember this and take the high-road during this mess. Go Vols.

Agree 100%! He's a class act and gave us all he had. I wish him and his family all the best. I wish it had worked out here.

  • I have been a Coach Dooley supporter, as well. But onje only has to look at his old team LATech to see what his old team has done without him over the same period. TN will have some options. There are some up and coming coaches in the Sun Belt league but suspect the Vol fans would go nuts if another from that league were hired. I continue to say Butch would be a coach TN may consider. He became the fall guy at NCU but is a high quality coach. One point in his favor, he is out of coaching, he is familiar with TN and knows what is expected in their program, a very good recruiter and knows the recruiting areas most desirable to the TN program really well. Cincy coach has done a good job, and there are many others out there that a FB laymen and ordinary fan like me would not know about. The bottom line is this has to be a good hire this time around.
