Dooley or Hinshaw most responsible for inept TN presence?

  • Why would Hinshaw be retained, given that we trail for most all of the top prospects in the 2013 and 2014 class? The Chattanooga Times article indicated that UT had no presence in the Chattanooga region (including nearby N. Georgia powerhouse schools Calhoun High and Ridgeland HS, home of Mr. Vonn Bell). A top 20 finish in recruiting is usually around #8-9 in the SEC, so that just doesn't cut it. The # 1player in 2013 is committed to USC and the #1 for 2014 isn't even considering the Vols with Hinshaw over recruiting. Or (and I really don't know) is it all Dooley's fault?

  • I don't think you can pin much of it on Hinshaw. I'm pretty sure without him we wouldn't have landed CP84 last year. And I'm not sure if he recruited all of them, but think about how awesome our class was in regards to WRs. He had to have had a hand in that. On top of that, I think he's done a fine job coaching. If there's one position we played well at it was WR. So I wouldn't mind if he were retained at all.

  • Dooley managed everything........Hinshaw only took over the recruiting coord position around Feb 2012.....only 9 months ago. Hinshaw is a proven top 25 recruiter too. Maybe he should not be the RC but he can flat out recruit and loves UT.

Dooleys issues was the 2010 staff that he had to put together in just a few weeks at the wrong time of the year.........they had virtually no south ties. He was fixing the TN, NC and VA mess with this staff putting more assistants in TN as an example........it was too late.

  • As Ive said before, when we talk about staff, trust in Jones. We have no other choice, nor should we. Folks, this staff, meaniong Dooley's, had their chance. They failed. All of them. So, given staff development of Jones, he should have the freedom to determine who is worthy and who isn't. We all have out thoughts on what staff shoudl be retained, but tying the hands of Jones to certain staff only makes accountability that much more difficult.

I totally agree with that. Just not sure why so many people are wanting to keep HInshaw our recruiting coordinator when we weren't even a finalist for most of the top in-state guys (Ramsey, Wilkins, Herron, Elder, and one of the top 10 players in nation for 2014, Jalen Hurd).

  • Dooley was the Head Coach. He gets final decision. I am not a recruiting expert, but I do understand chain of command so until proven otherwise unfortunately for Dooley he is at fault.

UT's problems go a good bit further back than Dooley. Bad hires and a coaching attrition problem leads to bad recruiting and NCAA problems dont help. I am a believer that Dooley is a solid coach. Maybe not SEC caliber but all the problems going on right now dont rest squarly on DD. id say 70% of the issues were already there before he got there. He didnt do much to fix them but its not entirely his fault.

  • My hope is that coach Jones will treat every school in our state and certain regions as "his" school. I want every one of the coaches in these high schools to feel the support of UT whether they have a major recruit or not. As the state school TN must support and nurture high school football in the state. I know that you can't sign every player in your own state, however, we haven't been anywhere close to that over the last few years. Even if we lose a Tennessee player to another team I want us to have worked hard enough that TN was in his top 2.
