Dooley should SAY...

  • "I want to be the head coach at the University of Tennessee. Give me next year and I will turn in my resignation Jan 1, 2014 regardless, this University will not owe me one cent in buyout." If his results are same, he is gone and no money owed. If he produces, then hierarchy needs to decide to accept or deny his resignation." Derek Dooley deserves the 2013 season.

All he deserves is the amount of the buyout in his contract.

Ha that's a horrible idea. He get's paid what 2.2 mill a year his buyout Jan 1st 2014 is 4 million. Why would he ever do this.

  • No. He needs to be fired for his performance as HC in his 3 years here. Another year would just continue to set us back.

    back from what?

Just my two cents, but beating UF for 40 minutes, and coming up short in the 4th agaist Scar, UGA, and MSU (all top 16 teams) doesn't seem like something we were doing 4,5 or 6 years ago.

Four years ago UT beat GA and USCe. Six years ago UT beat GA, USCe, and MS State in Starkville.

I strongly disagree with the OP. We all know the stats: 0-14 verse ranked opponents, zero bowl game victories, 15-18 overall, zero wins against AL, FL, or GA, etc. JMO, DD's record, resume, and hiring practices all merit dismissal. Even so, I think the original hypo.is a tad bit detached from reality. DD won’t be giving up his buyout….just not going to happen man

Just to be clear, none of those teams were ranked when we played them. Not one of them. That season also included a loss a UCLA team that was one of the worst teams in the Pac 10.

My point isn't that UT doesn't have a winning tradition, but there is a reason we fired Fulmer and calling CLK's tenure here a success just isn't accurate.

I'm simply referring to Dooley's character. This statement would show his truthfulness in the "VFL" term he had coined, not just $$$.

I think any reasonable fan would agree that if CDD is terminated, whoever comes in inherits a more cushy situation than when Dooley was hired. That is Progress.

I'm not happy not winning. That's why he should say, I want next year and I don't want a buyout. CDD will be using year zero recruits that will be seniors and year one as juniors. Plus this gives credence to stand on this recruiting cycle.

If the wins aren't there then no problems, he is gone no questions asked. We cannot endure another ugly mess.

Yes, but to be fair, that was followed by the implosion of Fulmer's final recruiting class and Kiffin's only recruiting class. It was so bad that UT could not even fill out the 85 scholarship NCAA limit (they were at about 60-65 players). In 2010, when UT went to LSU, two-thirds of their team had never even Dressed for a college road game (much less played in one). Dooley's takeover at UT was not just a simple case of a big name school fallen on a couple of tough years. The situation that Dooley inherited was more akin to a program bouncing back from the NCAA death penalty. We are just now at the 85 scholarship limit.

Don't get me wrong, the defense is horrible and I think Sunseri should have been fired or at least demoted to LB coach only This Morning (with Conklin the new DC). I am still not convinced that Dooley is a good in-game coach (although I think he is a good organizer - which is perhaps what the program needed following Kiffen's departure). However, anyone who thought that this mess would be cleaned up in three years either did/does not have a real view of the state of the program that Dooley took over or is simply in denial. The team IS better than it was 4 or 5 years ago. The problem is - so are AL, SC, LSU, etc.

Again, I am not 100 percent sure Dooley is the answer, but this situation was not simply a matter of a new coach coming in, talking a good game, installing a new offensive/defensive scheme and winning again. The program was literally a disaster when Dooley took over. That can't be overstated and should not be overlooked - particularly unless there is a sure-fire, can't miss, big name head coach ready to be the next head coach.

Georgia was ranked and so was South Carolina at the time we played them in 2007. I believe that GA team ended up number 2 overall. South Carolina was ranked in 2009 when we won. None of that, to me, makes a difference as to whether UT keeps or fires Dooley. However, I think some passionate defenders of Dooley are getting a little to aggressive with their arguments and starting to get ahead of the facts. I have no problem with Dooley staying if he wins out, but I do have a problem with the revision of history by some that are defending him.

  • Thank you for the correction, I was thinking about the clk year not 2007, but not trying to mislead anyone.

Once again you are taking it too far, attempting to describe the state of the program when Dooley arrived. We weren't even close to a program bouncing back from the death penalty. Just ask SMU what that's like. There is way too much hyperbole around here in defense of Dooley and/or in support of giving him the boot.

If Dooley comes back next year, after winning out this year, I will not be mad. However, Dooley blew an opportunity that the better coaches turn into gold when he couldn't get the substitutions right with the game on the line and pressure on at LSU. He blew his goodwill from alot of fans and heated his own seat when he couldn't get his team up to beat an extremely less talented team at KY. In all the defenses that you and others make for Dooley, you push these two things aside as if Dooley, in those situations, shouldn't have been expected to do anything else but lose. If Dooley is finished after this year, IMO, those two games will have had more to do with that outcome than just about anything else. If he wins those two games, Sunseri probably wouldn't be here.
