Dooley to Southern Miss. Thoughts?

Just saw where Ellis Johnson won't be returning next season. What do you guys think?

I think he will take a year or two off. Most fired head coaches seem to do that.
I hope for his sake that he catches on as a HC somewhere because without Coordinator experience I question whether he will have another shot at working up the ladder.

Just what I was thinking. Where ever he ends up I hope he gets a nice hefty salary. Save the UT bucks for current staff.

I don't think it would. I believe his money is guaranteed like Fulmers' was.

Dooley will likely take a year off and spend some of the $5 Million. I know I would. After that, I think he should go for an athletic director gig at a mid-major. He just is not a great football coach. However, he is a good organizer and would likely be a good AD one day.

Wow, i thought it would be reduced by an salary that he made during the buyout period but i don't remember where i heard that. I could be wrong.

Who cares about Dooley. The big question is can our new HC get Ellis Johnson as his DC. He would be great IMO. Obviously was horrible this year as a HC but has been a great DC in the SEC for a long time.

Dooley's contract does not include that clause. He gets $5 million regardless.
The coaches hired by Hart (Graham, Pittman, Sal, etc.) have that clause.

Thanks Smokey, Wataugavol and RT85. It just blows my mind that there was no clause in Dooley's contract that a buyout would be reduced if he immediately found a new job. I might need to negotiate some contracts with our former AD.

I don't think this is correct. My understanding was that his buyout (along with at least a couple of the assistants' buyouts) was unconditional. Meaning that it doesn't matter what he does or doesn't do - the money is his.

This is proof of why you don't take an elite DC and try to make a head coach out of him when he has no HCing experience. Southern Miss was a good team. Went from 12-2 to 0-12 in 1 year. Johnson is every bit as good of a DC as Kirby Smart as well.

Hyams said according to the people he's talked to close to Dooley he doesn't think Dooley will ever coach again because he has no interest in being an assistant or working his way up from a small school again. Said he'll probably go into TV.

I listened to Vince Dooley's interview with Hyams and he said something along the lines of Dooley taking some time off to reflect but Vince had no clue what he'd end up doing in the future. It's ultimately up to him as to whether or not he wants to coach again though..Not anyone else who is "close to him". I can't imagine jumping straight from the wreck this season was at UT to another coaching job even if he was considered. There's only so much stress a man (and his family, no less) can take all at once...
