Dooley's Fate

  • IMO I already think Dooleys fate is already sealed being 0-5 in the SEC for the 3rd straight year. With that being said I do commend him on the job he as done minus the coaching aspect but from an administrative standpoint as well as recruiting. He has set the foundation for the next coach to come in and have success. He started the VFL program and has brought back talent to compete in this league. It is sad to say but I think the hiring of Sunseri and how poorly the D has produced is the writing on the wall. It was a mistake to try to "Sabenize" this University. We need a coach with ties to OUR school. Now if we do have a top tier coach in mind such as the Gruden then we need to go ahead and pull the trigger and if not we need to let Dooley finish what he started because bringing in another mediocre coach will just be a step back and we will have to start all over. I do believe the Dooley hiring was a panicked hire to close on the recruiting class. I feel bad for the guy because he is a class act and has done more than I expected him to do. Now lets get a guy that can coach these kids back to relevence. GO VOLS

  • Agreed. My fear is that Hart would go after Smart given his Bama ties. That would be terrible IMO. Smart probably keep Sunseri as DC and we become Bama Jr.

Unless we get a KNOCKOUT hire, we keep Dooley.

Never been a HC and The only coordinator job he's ever had is under Saban.. It's not like he's the one running the defense. Really doesn't have enough experience IMO

  • I feel sure Smart could go 0-twenty whatever against ranked teams, 0-5 in the SEC and 1-12 in 13 SEC games without much trouble. That's what we are betting now so what's the "concern" or "chance" we are taking?

Good post Zach. I agree with most of your post except I'm still on the fence on Dooley's coaching ability. I see improvement on this team, even on defense. I think most of the problems we see on defense right now are a culmination of mental errors by players and not having the personnel needed on the back end. I still agree with going to a 3-4 defense this year because of the different looks given.

I think the chance is that Smart is unproven as a HC and might have the same record as Dooley. Tennessee can't afford to miss on this next hire.

We couldn't afford to miss on the last hire but it is plainly obvious we did.

Hart's hands are tied now and Dooley must go. There is no way Hart can justify keeping Dooley beyond this season with the uncertainty around Dooley's job stability killing any chance he had at recruiting..

    GoVols2011

  • Despite the low job stability it looks like we will have a top 20 class this year.

  • I think we are just 11th recruiting in the SEC. That's not very good. Kinda let down by the lack of big named players committed so far. Not knocking the ones committed now just saying if we had Vonn Bell and Green already signed it would help the numbers so I don't know. I wouldnt fire him unless you have a big name coach already lined up.

Really good chance it goes south and in a hurry. Dooley at 7-5 isn't attracting anybody that has options to come play for him. That is reality not fantasy as some of you continue to live in.

The reality is that we are 3-5 and still have a top 20 class. Most of these top recruits we are targeting are very likely waiting until the end of the season to see if Dooley will still be here. What I find amazing is the limited success we have seen in the last 5 years, yet we still have these high profile recruits considering coming to Tennessee. If we win out and Dooley stays, I believe the recruiting class will take a turn for the better, much better. But, we'll have to wait and see.

We may end up with a top 20 or top 15 class but look what place we are in the SEC recruiting. Finishing 8th or worse in the conference in recruiting is exactly the recipe
    for mediocrity

If we grab a couple of these big recruits, we'll move up in the SEC rankings as well. Hard to judge a recruiting class before it's even been signed.

Show me where we are ranked in the top 20 in recruiting, remember I am in living in reality not fantasy land. Tell me how you can possibly think this class gets better? Do you actually believe Von Bell or Green is going to come here if Dooley goes 7-5 and his seat is still hot as it can get going into next year?

The current class does not catch us up to the elite of the SEC and we already know what kind of record to expect from Dooley when he has less talent.

I really do not understand why some are so invested in Dooley and continue to justify his failures not only at Tennessee but also at La. Tech.
