Dooley's Future

  • Personally I'm as frustrated as any Vol fan out there, but I have come to the conclusion that the best thing for us to do is give Dooley a 5yr contract extension . I know that this makes no logical sense to most of you, so allow me to explain. More than likely Dooley is going to get another anyway and let's face it recruits see this and know this . It's no big secret that stability has more influence on a program than anything else ,or the illusion of stability that is . Recruits are gravitated to programs with coaches that have stability and run a pro style system like we do, they have dreams of someday playing in the NFL so they are naturally going to gravitate to a program that can fill that need or best help them accomplish that goal . Assistant Coaches will be more inclined to take a position if there is the illusion of stability .

Let's face Gruden is not going to come to Tennessee and Kirby Smart is no guarantee . So, we give Dooley a 5 year extension and thus create an illusion of stability . It would have a tremendous impact on recruiting because let's face it no recruit wants to have a coaching change since this usually means a system change . Recruits go a school more for the system than the educational benefits since they are thinking 3 years and then I'm looking at the draft and lets face it nobody wins games on coaching alone you must have talent. In the event Dooley decided to make a coaching change he would have an easier time attracting a proven assistant coach because of the illusion of stability and in the event Dooley has a season to remember next year well he's already under contract, if he doesn't well we simply buy him out and move on. How many 5 star recruits have we had on the Hill last season and this season ? How many of them decided against us and went with programs with more stability or the illusion of stability ? That's my point !

  • Even Dooley guys won't agree with this. 5 Years of Dooley? Do you want there to be 20,000 people that go to games?

Yeah drizzle 20,000 would be on a good day if Dooley is still here next year I'll save my money and stay home to see us get slaughtered

I understand your point but I disagree we want to create the "illusion of stability". We want stability with no illusion. Just stability.

Can Dooley bring that and put butts in the seats? No, I don't think so. Keeping Dooley under a new contract is classic "throwing good money after bad" and is a good way for an athletic director to get fired. And Dave Hart is nobody's fool. Slowly but surely the poor play on the field and declining attendance is forcing his hand.

  • We could create the illusion of stability if Hart would just come out publicly and say "Dooley is our guy today and tomorrow", even if it's a lie.

No more smoke and mirrors. The powers at be have a very good opportunity to fix our hemorrhaging football program right now, and money doesn't seem to be a problem. If they don't fix it now, we may end up like Colorado is right now.

  • There's no way I'd give Dooley another extension unless it changed the buyout clause to be around $500000.

I would argue that stability is way overrated this day and time in college football. I'd posted in a previous thread numerous coaches who have had great success within the first 3 years at their new school. And I know, none of those guys inherited the barn fire that Dooley did, but the point remains that if a good hire is made we do not have to move backwards as a program like everyone is saying.

I think Dooley needs 1 more year (outside of can't miss, home run replacement), but I would not bust out with a 5 year extension. Let's see how next year goes.
