Dooley's wins

  • 2010 -
    1. UT Martin
    2. UAB
    3. Memphis
    4. Ole Miss
    5. Vandy
    6. Kentucky
    Should've beat LSU and UNC

    2011-
    1. Montana
    2. Cincy
    3. Buffalo
    4. MTSU
    5. Vanderbilt
Could've beat South Carolina, Should've beat Kentucky

    2012-
    1. NC State
    2. Georgia State
    3. Akron
Let's say for argument sake that he beats Troy, Missouri, Vandy and UK.

It could be argued that Dooley's most successful season was his first season. Had LSU and North Carolina beat and let them off the hook. I keep hearing how bad of shape the roster was in when he arrived and he had decent success in his first year and took a step back in year two and has not yet taken a step forward in year three. I'm not saying to replace Dooley at this time but looking at the roster and the wins since he arrived, it is hard to say that he greatly improved the team with his recruits and coaches. Of course we could beat Bama or USCe and all of this is irrelevant but Dooley and Co. are really going to have to show drastic improvement next year to keep his job beyond 2013. Just looking back at his body of work and wondering what everyones thoughts are.

  • Actually, we have taken a huge step forward in year three. Yes, we're 3-3 but you'd have to be blind to not see the improvement.

  • This is year two. Remember the first year was actually year zero

  • I can see fine thank you very much. I think much of the improvement this season is based on a healthy Bray and Hunter. If those 2 were healthy last year, we probably win 2 or 3 more games. This season, we have a fairly healthy roster and haven't taken any huge steps forward besides being able to use the Vandy line of "if we had only made 3 or 4 more plays, we'd be undefeated." Hey, I'm willing to give Dooley through 2013 to prove himself, I would have just liked to see more from this team than we have. Still 6 games to go, so they will have plenty of chances to get it done.

  • We came VERY close to losing to UAB in 2010 it took an overtime IIRC. Guys, it was really really bad.

  • Yeah, I don't get this. Our D was better because we had 3 or 4 decent seniors and Janzen. Other than that, there's no way we should have even been in that game with LSU. UNC still sux and should have beat them. I'd say this team would definitely stomp that one.

You've kind of made my point, if this team is so much better than 2010, why are there not significantly more wins? I think Dooley did more with the team in 2010 than he has with this one. We played above our head a few times that year and have not yet this season. Like I said though, still have 6 games to get that done this year. I just expected this team to beat 1 of UF, UGA or Miss St. The great thing about football is you have a new opportunity every week.

The reason the wins dont match up is because we have lost to three ranked teams, two of them on the road. If this years team played his first team, the current roster would be 14 point favorites.

+1 on the original post though, puts in perspective how little success we have had, especially on the road.

If you remember when CDD was hired and think back to that time it was a 4 or 5 year rebuild. I believe everyone that follows or posts would agree with that back then. We are in 2.5 or 3 what ever you want to call it and there is much improvement this year.

This is not a orange colored glasses but reality-we were not a good team and He got the best out of what he had.

We have not really lost a game we should have won except for the Ky game last year.

And yes year one in most peoples minds should have been year zero--he got on the trail 2 weeks prior to signing day and in those two weeks put together a staff and a recruiting class. Come on is that really fair?

    After clk how many departed?

My point was that Defense wins in this league and we haven't finished rebuilding there, obviously.

  • We've played six games and the defense hasn't gotten better, in fact it may have gotten worse. And no one can pinpoint or tell us why it hasn't gotten fixed. One coach says communication, one says its lining up wrong another says its just not making plays. Dooley himself said its not all "growing pains" to the 3-4 scheme. That tells me no one knows and no one knows how to fix it. That's the frustrating part for me.

Pretty obvious to me it's talent on the Dline and lack of LB's. When all Dlinemen are being single blocked, that's always recipe for disaster.

You're using "Should've" and "Could've" in year 1 and year 2, but you could also same the same for year 3. We "should've" or "could've" beat FL while up 7 on their 47 yard line with 3 minutes left to go in the 3rd quarter. We "should've" or "could've" beat GA with the ball in our hand and down 7 on GA's 30 yard line. We "should've" or "could've" beat Ms. St down 3 and driving before Devrin coughs it up.

Fact of the matter is that every season is different and you have different players and different team dynamics. Last year we ran a 4-3 with Wilcox and this year we have young players that have to learn a completely new system that takes more than one off-season to learn for veterans, let alone freshman, sophomores, and juniors. Bottom line is play hard the next 2 weeks, maybe grab one, but win in November, practice in December for a bowl game, and work like heck next off-season to have a great 2013. Dooley and staff are $10mil buyout, it's not happening unless you have a Gruden that's guaranteed, otherwise you're starting all over.

Support Dooley and the team and hope for the best! Go Vols.

  • If Year 1 was really Year 0, and Year 2 was Year 1, with the huge coaching rollover after last season, could this be concidered Year 1.1? So he is going into game 7 of his first year with 14 victories. That is 2.000 winning percentage, highest among active coaches. Highest all-time.

Everyone does forget he, and everyone involved, said it was going to be a huge rebuilding process. And that was before almost completely redoing his staff. I think he is getting us there.

i have a bigger problem using "should've" and "could've" won in year 3 of a staff than in year 1 or 2. You expect those things early on but the excuses have to stop at some point, right? Maybe that point is year 4 for this staff but i think we have the talent to have beaten one of the 3 teams we lost to this year.

  • You are assuming a loss is a loss. Kind of simple minded. Last year we were blown out most games. This year we have been in every game in the fourth qutr. Last year we couldn't run the ball in a game against a good high school team. This year we are able to run and lay 30 points on anyone. This year we have a new D. Everyone struggles when changing. Look back at bama's first year or ga's first year.

Things will be good at Tennessee because people like you are not in charge. Have a good day, GBO

Can we not have a discussion without the "Things will be good at Tennessee because people like you are not in charge" comment? I thought you and this board were better than that.

  • I have several friends who are comparing Dooley's era at UT to the Mike Shula era at Bama. Their argument is that he can recruit and has a law degree but he cant coach X's and O's. t is an interesting argument. I don't know who our Nick Saban's would be if Dooley is not given more time.

That's my point exactly with not getting rid of Dooley. We would have to hire a Saban in order for things to completely progress in the right direction. So we'd need someone that has 3 Divisional Championships, 2 Conference Championships, and 1 National Championship! Who's got that other than Stoops?
