  • I am answering the call for more posts so I apologize for this not being football related directly. Also I have been a member for maybe 3 years now and really enjoy the information I get, and the time I spend here on the site. I quite often read / see homonyms misused in the articles i.e. " knew" as opposed to "new" being used in the prose. Rarely do I come across other spelling or grammatical errors. I know you guys are professionals and take pride in the excellent work that you do. So I was curious if you actually maniacally type out all these things or has journalism now progressed to the voice recognition phase and the machine cannot differentiate one sounding word from another same sounding word. I mean no disrespect here and am only curious about the technology. Believe me without spell checker and a wife who is an English teacher my writings would be a mess. Thank you for a GREAT site. T

  • I think the Redhead had Wes all torn up on Valentines Day!bashful I saw the "knew" instead of "new" in his article about receivers and a few other minor spelling mistakes. But he is forgiven! The article was great!

    ....their improper usage only irritates me after I've had a bad day. They're really not that difficult to understand. There are times when bad grammar undermines your argument, and you're likely to be less persuasive because of the effects of inarticulativeness. Whether you're a loser or your morals are looser, it will affect the way you are portrayed in the mind of the reader. I now know of no other way to find out if they knew about the new commitments we signed LOI's to than to follow the postings on GoVols247, so please try reading the post at least once before posting.

    I just confused myself trying to write that....now I've got a headache. You know what, forget what I said, we'll be able to figure out what you were trying to say. If we can't, we'll ask.

    I know exactly what you were saying and it was right on point.

    As a former journalist during a time when newspapers had large staffs of copy editors who closely examined stories searching for spelling, grammar and factual errors, it has been tough for me to adjust to new media where the writer writes and pushes the publish button without much of a once over from anyone else.

    And poring through the prose of people who don't write or spell well in posts can be very tough.

    I've suppressed my "grammar police" tendencies and roll with the flow these days. This is a different age and literacy obviously isn't as important as it used to be. We can debate the merits of it, but we can't escape the reality that things that used to be almost perfect are now flawed. It's a new world.

    I do laugh out loud, though when someone calls another poster on TOS a "maroon" or a "looser." It takes one to "no" one.

    I love those type of comments. My favorite one so far is, "OMG your so stuped!" Pot, meet kettle, I think you two will get along just fine.

    I think the end for proper spelling and punctuation came when "txtspk" first began. It was too tedious to use complete words and sentences on the older phones, when you had to push a button three times to make a "c". That lasted just long enough for an entire generation to be tainted. Now, even though they have smartphones that can give them the correct spelling and have full keyboards, they are locked in to "txtspk" and "lolspk".

    I'm pretty sure it's a death spiral with no hope of recovery. I would say, "if u cnt beatm joynm" but I would rather quit writing period before that.

  • Phone keyboards and the world of texting definitely contributed to the death spiral. Mistakes don't bother people anymore because they just blame them on the tools they are using.

    Hey RTATL. I did always enjoy when Bugs Bunny would say "What a maroon." I still like that quote.

    Exactly, right! I told the girl at work that she misspelled "tomarrow" and she said it was just a typo. I had seen that misspelling a dozen times by her before I pointed it out to her. That's not a typo- it's ignorance!

  • Hey I don't mind at all as long as I don't have to read it 3+ times to understand it. I mean, my dad and uncle are the worlds worst speakers and spellers so they made me get used to it. They say "knowd" instead of knew, and "heerd" instead I heard. So it doesn't bother me I can tell what they mean.

    Jeez, the loose & lose one kills me. I know I've never seen it in an article, but it makes it to the board pretty often. They're not even HOMONYMS!!!

  • These homonym screwups drive me nuts, but I'm trying to live with it.

    When I was running a daily newspaper in the 80s it was common practice to edit letters to the editor, but I refused. I ran them raw so people could form an impression of the writer.

  • The spelling part doesn't bother me much. What bothers me are the posters who don't capitalize or use punctuation. I have a hard time keeping up with what they are trying to say. Usually I will just skip over those.

    This really gets under my skin. Those of us that wasn't able to get an education due to things that was out of our control. Sometimes i even hesitate to post here, thinking i might use the wrong word or not spell it right,but the hell with all you that are so concern about being perfect with your English. Some of us try hard so thats good enough for me. Go Vols
