Elite recruits that UT came in 2nd for 2009-2013 (Updated)

  • A trip down memory lane. Not all but most all of these were 4* or 5* players on multiple sites:

2013 (Dooley/ Jones class- hired in mid Dec):

    Dooley:
    RB D Henry- Bama
WR J Rumph- UGA (top 2 with Dooleys staff and the same with Bradley...we might have been #1)- juco WR

    Jones:
    DE C Lawson- AU
    RB D Green- Mich
LB J Grace- Miami (Louisville involved too)
DT B Bradley- AU- juco DT
OG R Koehler- Ark (w/ CDDs staff we land him along with D. Skipper, D Cambell, B Bradley and maybe J Rumph)
    LB EJ Levenberry- Fl St
    S Vonn Bell- Ohio St
    WR T Boyd- Pitt
    LB T Johnson- Ohio St
OT C Morris- UCLA (maybe 3rd to OMiss)
WR S Gibson- WVU (maybe 2nd)
    RB J Ford- AU
    DE D Bellamy- UGA

Other highly thought of targets that were 3*s:
LB D Campbell- Minn- a 3* but IMO he has a ton of athletic ability and a position of need- juco OLB
OT D Skipper- Ark- I have a feeling he could be very good but 6-10
    OL C Kondolo- Neb

*of course with staff changes you will lose recruits...so its not really on CBJs for any of the ones above but just including them for the sake of this exercise

2012 (Dooley had been here 2 full years):

RB M. Pender- Fl St (had him being an EE til just the last few hours when Fl St got him in school)
    LB D Santos- TX
    LB O Peters- Ark
RB M Davis- USCe (maybe have been 3rd)
    OT DJ Humphries- FL
    OT A Jelks- Vandy
DE D Autry- Ms St (shocked his parents and Brajp flipping late)- juco DE
DT K Kirven- Bama (Va Tech prob 2nd)
    WR Q Davis- UNC
DT D Jacobs- FL- juco DT
    CB O Jacobs TAMU
    TE B Jackson- Ok St

Not sure on but maybe: DE D Hamilon (Rutgers) and RB M Grice (Ariz St)- juco...maybe 3rd for him after TAMU, LB JH Clemons (UGA)

2011 (Dooley had been here 1 year):

DT T Jernigan- Fl St (maybe a distant 2nd after we got his last visit)
DT G Wright- AU (I still dont think it was as close as some think bc of he visited AU late on his own dime + the last OV)
    LB L Dawson- USCw
    TE B Fulse- AU
    RB B Bigelow- Cal
DE L Mackey- T Tech (shocker to even Brajp)- juco DE

Not sure on but maybe: TE E. McClaine (Clemson), TE J Rome (UGA), LB CJ Johnson (OMiss), DE R Drew (UGA) and a few other RBs in that class like RB M Bellamy (Clemson)

2010 (Kiffin/ Dooley's class- had been at UT for 2.5 weeks):

WR M Ambles- USCw (UNC was in there too IIRC)
DE D Jones- OMiss (not sure on this one at all)
DT JC Copeland- LSU (DT we desperately needed that played FB there)
DE B Willis- UNC (he was driving to UT to EE)
CB A Dixon- Baylor (not sure on this one......I just remember a Dixon we missed on late)
LB M Taylor- FL (with Kiffin before he bolted in mid Jan. as with a few others in this class)
    DB M Elam- FL
    LB J Luc- FSU
    LB C Jones- FSU
    QB J Scroggins- USCw
    QB J Heaps- BYU
    RB M Dyer- AU
    S J Diggs USCe
    OL C Green- FL
    DE/LB B Irvin- WVU

    2009 (Fulmer/ Kiffin's class):

RB E Lacy- Bama (flipped at the last moment)
    DE S Montgomery- LSU
    APB J Giles- USCe
    OT M Moses- VA
QB T Boyd- Clemson (Kiffin passed on him)
    QB J Nunes- Stanford

    Others: 3* DBDJ Swearinger (USCe)

Yep..........just thought I would share. Win games and we will win many more battles. UT still attracts top talent to the very end as this list shows

  • Interesting list for sure Sam. I think I'm just getting tired of "what might have been," hope you didnt think i was being a smart ass toward you. Heck even Looser with Socks plagiarized my Fulmer posts today in an online article. What might have been...

  • No worries. cheers

I think he is saying we attract the talent. If we could win some games we would be getting the talent we attract.

Yep......this list was from 4 head coaching changes (if you incl Fulmer to Kiffin) and 40+ assts and 5-7,7-6,6-7,5-7, and 5-7. We win, get some stability and we will win battles come NSD.

  • The one thing this does show is that it could have been a really great class. Just imagine if we had beat Missouri and gotten to a bowl game! I really think that would have flipped several of these recruits....however who knows how that would of affected the coaching situation.

We beat Mizzou and Vandy Dooley would still be here and he signs about a 15th-18th ranked class I think. The only chance Dooley had for a top 10 class was beat FL and then win other key games that were considered winnable. Even with wins vs MSU, Mizzou and Vandy he would not crack the top 10 classes IMO (you might even be able to toss in USCe).

I still think we are better off in the future with Jones and the changes he is making.

  • Funny, ironic. I wrote to Wes last night and asked if he thought we came in 1st with being #2 in choice picks from top recruits... Beingb2nd with so many means something going forward, I believe...

Cheers, Go Vols 2014 and beyond

Agree that we are better off....just thought of Bell and his comments about wanting to play for a winning program.
