I'm not saying Gruden can't or won't happen, but this whole reasoning of "where there's smoke there's fire" doesn't work. If people like you and me are the ones that keep talking about it, it ISN'T smoke from a fire. We are "blowing smoke", so to speak.

    Exactly!!

    I agree, coonhound.

And the Randy Shannon rumors last year. And the Lovie Smith rumors 3 years ago.

To say that the Gruden thing is picking up steam on TOS is like saying that the Unicorn thing is picking up steam on the front page of the Enquirer.

I'm not saying Gruden can't or won't happen, but this whole reasoning of "where there's smoke there's fire" doesn't work. If people like you and me are the ones that keep talking about it, it ISN'T smoke from a fire. We are "blowing smoke", so to speak.

Citing TOS (and we're talking about posters here, not beat writers) as a source to validate a point doesn't hold water.

    Agree 99%; +1.

I think the unicorn would be more likely to appear on the "Weekly World News" cover. Even the Enquirer wouldn't go that far. lol Oh, but some of our fans would.

And even though I haven't posted it before now, one of annoyances, too, has been the tired "smoke/fire" analogy. The old saw may hold true if the smoke is coming out of the athletic department or Gruden's camp (though not definitely, even then; could be a "smokescreen"), but I'm getting sick and tired of people creating their own smoke and arguing it means there's a fire somewhere else.

Some of these folks, too, esp. on TOS, want to go back online in a few weeks, and if they got their WAG (someone who's been in the military will tell you that's a "wild a_ _ guess") right, crow that they had inside information and they were right all along. "I told you so; I told you so!!!!" frustrated

You can negotiate through an agent, I believe, without technical violation of the items on your list. Once the season is over, you ask the coach's school for permission to talk, and the coach takes a look at the frame work of the deal, a few changes are made and within a few days you have your coach. I never liked the way Hamilton conducted business, interviewing all those coaches. You should send out feelers, figure out who's interested, get the agent for your number one choice on the phone, get a framework for a contract in place, then ask for permission to speak to the coach, who you're pretty sure is going to say yes. You get your new coach and you don't have to clean any egg off your face because guys like Calhoun or Brewster come out and say they're not interested, like they did the second time around, or a guy like Muschamp tells you he's not interested, but recommends someone else.

This is almost entirely true. You can have a rough agreement in principle worked out through intermediaries with no direct contact whatsoever, and that's usually the way it's done, but you still don't commit to hiring ANYONE without an interview at the end of the process. Unlikely, but you might think you love the guy as an AD, and then be totally underwhelmed in an interview.

Also, IF you're reduced to lesser known candidates, for whatever reason (guys you wanted turned you down, not enough $$$ to hire them, etc.), as was Hammy, and you're stuck hiring someone way down your list, you have to interview them up front before you do anything else.

I agree. I didn't mean to imply that there wouldn't be an interview, but IMO, if the interview is a major factor (you didn't get your top guys), IMO, something went wrong with the plan, and if the interview changes your plan (you were underwhelmed in the interview) you didn't do your homework before you ranked your targets.

As to Ainge, we all know, I hope, that most if not all of the call in talk shows are no more than radio soap operas. We have the "host" who tries to out "edge" the competition by stretching the facts just a little. The participants take those stretched facts and add to them. By the end of the show there has to be something exciting to hold over for the next day. Why we buy into this kind of thing is mind boggling. At least the ladies that watch the TV soap operas have a good idea they are fiction. Us men and the radio sports talk shows...our imagination and our emotions seem to overwhelm our intellect.

Totally, 100% agree. This is in the top 10 or so posts here in the last month, IMO.

Men love a good soap opera more than women do:

-Sons of Anarchy? Male soap opera

-Pro wrestling? Male soap opera some dudes pay $40.00 a pop to watch

-NASCAR? About as much male soap opera as racing, in terms of how the sport is promoted and publicized, as indicated by the amount of coverage the Gordon/Boyer wreck and fight in the pits got this week. And listen to a NASCAR call-in show. no

Agreed, but in lieu of the above phrase, you could have just written the words "Mike Hamilton." biggrin.

We could even write a little ditty about it:

We didn't get our top guy--Mike Hamilton!
    Somethin' went awry--Mike Hamilton!
    He's always sayin' D'oh!--Mike Hamilton!
All the candidates said no--Mike Hamilton!

Let's just hope Hart does a little bit better job of planning his work and working his plan than Hammy.
