Same here. Been watching football for a long time, and I've never seen anything like that.

Me either. I thought we were about to get another "givin' him the business" explanation on the call, but it turned out that I learned a new rule. biggrin

So the only way a team could score one point for the entire game would be on a conversion safety by the defense on the conversion. According to Wikipedia this has never happend, and for an obvious reason -- the kicking team would have to be tackled in their own end zone 98 yards away.

No. It would happen just as it did tonight, right? If a team that hadn't scored a touchdown blocked the opposing team's extra point, fielded it outside the goal line and then either fumbled or ran back into the end zone, it could score one point and finish that way.

But the kicking team already has 6 points for the TD, so they will have more than one point for the game. The only way for a team to finish with only one point is for the defending team to get the safety, and that would have to happen at the other end zone.

It's not the kicking team who would score the one point. It's the team who's on defense while the kicking team is attempting the extra point. That's how it happened last night.

If the defending team reached the end zone on the opposite end of the field from where the PAT is being kicked, that would be a touchdown — or, on an extra point, a two-point conversation for the block and return. But as far as a safety on a blocked extra point, like we're talking about here, there is a way for a team to score just one point.

The kicking team (Oregon) did score the point last night when KSU (the defense) grabbed the blocked kick, ran backwards into the end zone, and was caught for a "conversion safety" that gave Oregon one point.

I agree with your second paragraph. What I was talking about initially is that it is possible for a team to score 1 point in an ENTIRE GAME. That would require that a team that had not scored (the defense on the extra point) to get a safety on the kicking team by tackling them in that team's end zone 98 yards away and then not scoring any more the rest of the game.

I had never realized that it was possible for a team to score only one point in an entire game (though it has never happened).

Oh, wait. You're right. Sorry. The weirdness of the play last night confused me. Never mind. I'm an idiot. biggrin

It was late last night when we started this discussion and you've been really busy. You are definitely no idiot.

If we ever have to deal with this on some esoteric trivia question, we will be prepared. thumbsup
