Try a place where you can buy one of each type, like a mix and match 6-pack. That's kind of what I always tell people. Find a style (Porter, IPA, Bock, Pilsener, etc.) that you like and then try different brands. You'll get better at recognizing the quality you're looking for. Don't listen to the "beer snobs" who tell you that you have to like a certain kind/style/brand. For instance, I saw some people who love Samuel Adams, but I don't. No biggie, everyone has their own tastes. I also don't care for wheat beers. Just not my thing. I love several styles of beer too.

Someone up top posted to go to a Microbrew/Brew pub and try several different styles. That's a great idea, IMO. You may find that you like stouts but don't care for IPAs. It's all about what YOU like. No pressure, just find what it is that suits you and have fun!!!

    CHEERS!!! cheers

I hit you with a +1 on all your other posts in this thread. Sorry man, I hit the button at the wrong time.

  • Really, your ability to get any of the beers listed here depends on where you live. TN has bad distribution laws, which makes it difficult for some beer companies to do business in the state. If you live in Knoxville, you should just go to Barley's or Sunspot for $2 pints (on Tuesdays) or hit up the Casual Pint and see what you like. I will give a few recommendations for beers that are available in Knoxville, some that aren't, and some that require visiting a liquor store to purchase in TN.

    Terrapin's Hopsecutioner
    Terrpain's Moohoo Stout
    Bell's Java Stout
    Dogfish Head Indian Brown
Chimay Blue Label (good first Belgian to try)
    Delirium Nocturnum
    Sweetwater IPA (good starter IPA)
Pisgah's King Don's Pumpkin Ale (much better than Cottonwood's and slightly better than Terrapin's)
    Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA
Great Divide's Yeti (very, very dark)
Samuel Smith makes a good porter and stout
Old Stout number 38 (good starter stout)
    Bell's Kalamazoo Stout.
    Stone Vertical Epic
    Stone Arrogant Bastard

Most of these are either fairly dark or fairly bitter.

  • My 3 favorite: Cold, yellow and free.

  • I prefer a nice amber ale, myself... and my favorite "go to" is Killian's. As far as smaller breweries go (and some you might easily find on the left coast) check out Evil Dead Red and Hop Head Red, Calico Amber, and My Bloody Valentine...all brewed in San Diego by different small brewers.

If you want something with a little more of a "kick", try Innis & Gunn Rum Cask. It's brewed and stored in old rum barrels, and takes on some of the flavor (and lots of the alcohol). It's pricey, comes in 4-packs, and due to alcohol-by-volume here in Tennessee, you have to get it from a liquor store.

    cheers

Love a good Milk Stout... Lancaster Milk Stout in Lancaster PA is amazing.

Not sure how I forgot to add Fullers ESB. Fantastic stuff, but probably more of an acquired taste.

  • Been around the world 6 times and drank beer in every country that wasn't trying to kill me. After all that I still remain a simple kind of man........ Batender, I'll take a Coors Light in the bottle. And when I feel like stepping out of the box, a little Red Stripe goes a long way.

Newcastle is great beer. They have a Founders Ale that is really good also. It must be seasonal because I haven't seen it around lately. Since you're a Newcastle fan -- I would definitely recommend this one to you.

This is one of the best beers I've ever had. Definitely the kind you drink in a smaller glass, though. It's powerful sh-t. The 60 and 90 minute IPAs are also really good - still really hoppy but milder than the 120.

Dogfishhead is hands down my favorite brewery. Can't go wrong with 60 Minute IPA. There's a reason why 120 and 90 are in 4 packs instead of 6 packs. ;)

Also, the best IPA I think I've ever had ...ever is is La Cumbre's Elevated IPA. (if you like citrus and pine cones...this is your best west coast IPA...bar none in my opinion.)

  • If you like a lighter beer, go with a Belgian. I noticed some people mentioned Chimay, Corsendanc (sp?) and Delirium Tremens. Delirium is by far my favorite of the widely available Belgians but it is too pricey for everyday consumption.

I have found myself over the years gravitating to IPA's. My favorite IPA at the moment is the Stone IPA. Frankly, anything from the Stone brewing company is top notch.

You might have to hit up a liquor store if you are in Tennessee for most of the above because the alcohol % is too high for supermarket's.

If you are near Nashville or Memphis, you can't go wrong going to Boscos. Get the tasting platter and I'm sure you'll find something you'll love.
