Favorite UT Legends: Quarterback

    Each day this week I'll start a thread where we can talk about our favorite UT legends at a particular position. We'll start with the most prominent -- and perhaps predictable -- spot on the field: quarterback.

    This thread is about more than merely naming our favorite. If that was the extent of it, 90% of us would say Peyton and move on. Instead, let's go deeper -- what was your favorite game that QB played? What stories about him will you tell your kids? Do you have an unconventional favorite UT QB -- Jerry Colquitt or Dewey Warren, perhaps?

    I'll start: While Peyton stands out for so many of us, my favorite Tennessee quarterback is Heath Shuler. His versatility and lightning-quick improvisational skills were dazzling, especially to a young UT fan like I was at the time. My favorite moments: Drowning Florida in the downpour in 1992 and watching him end Alabama's win streak in 1993 (albeit in a disappointing last-minute tie).

    Who are your favorites? What are your favorite memories?

    Shuler too..........should've won that game........Little Man layed a fumble down on the one yard line........One of the linebackers missed Barker on a 4th and something on the last drive........Couldn't find my car.......long, long trip home from Birmingham.

    That was my point. He was saying Andy Kelly didn't finish the year.

  • Heath was my favorite! He will probably will always be my favorite just because I went to all of his home games here and the Citrus Bowl and watched him as well and all of this while in my early teens made him that much greater to me! Wow.....Great memories!

    Where is Bray on the list? He is one of the best and worst QBs in UT history. His stats are second to only Peyton, but he didn't beat ANYBODY.

    I might be in the minority here but I think most of that debacle belongs to the coaches and defense. You as one person can only help your team score so many points before something bad happens. Georgia and South Carolina are most notable games to that statement.

  • You start going through all these names and you realize we've had some pretty good quarterbacks through the years. My list would be Manning, Holloway, Kelly, Martin and Shuler.

  • 1) The Swamp Rat Dewey Warren Rose Bonnet Bowl in Memphis
    2) Bubba Wyche victory over Bama and autographed my copy of Sports Illustrated
    3) Condredge Holloway his freshman center was a family friend, all Vol and always a threat to tuck it and go in those tear-away jerseys
    4) Casey Clausen a road warrior gladiator , the King of Swag, fearless

  • Forgot the memories part, imagine that!headslap Martins 23 consecutive completions is one I'll never forget. Peyton bootlegging one in against Alabama and laughing all the way from the 5 yard line in cause nobody knew where the ball was, the strike to Joey Kent to open the Alabama game, and the long pass from Martin to Price in the Fiesta Bowl.

    I would have to go Shuler as well. The 92' down poor against Florida was impressive, but my favorite performance from him was the week before against Georgia. Shuler took the Vols on his back and won with his arm and legs in that one. He flat out wore Georgia out with the QB draw in that game. Definitely my favorite UT QB besides Manning.

  • I can remember as a kid watching Jeff Francis, Andy Kelly, and Sterling Hinton. That was some of my first games growing up.

  • Tee is my favorite. His games that stood out were Syracuse when we new we had someone special. South Carolina game when he completed 21 straight passes and of course the National Championship game. Peyton was next. The game that really sticks out was the Georgia game at Georgia when he was supposed to quarterback sneak and he got stuffed and bounced back and threw a TD. I happened to be at that game sitting in that end zone. I will never forget that memory. The SEC Championship Game against Auburn was awesome as well when he played conductor and the comeback. Andy Kelly was great after taking over Sterling Henton after a unproductive first half of the season. Kelly took over and started a decade plus of dominance. Casey Clausen was great for 4 years. His games against Miami and Michigan stood out to me. Funny thing is his brothers game against LSU on Thursday night in Baton Rouge that went to multiple OTs was quite memorable as well. What great memories!!

  • I have a very vivid memory of sitting on the arm of my parents' couch in 1994 at age 12 watching TV as Shuler turned pro. I bursted into tears. I think it was the first time I realized I was emotionally invested in these guys in Orange and White.

    ...actually I probably hadn't turned 12 yet since my birthday is in June.

    Yup. Eleven year old girl crying over football player. Great memory.

  • this thread is over 8 hours old and still no love for Streater? What gives? i thought for sure he would be getting a ton of votes on here. i know he didnt get a ton of wins when he was here, but he was exciting to watch.

  • 1. Alan Cockrell - I was 9 years old & Tennessee had not beaten Bama since I had been alive. In Paris, Tennessee the stores restaurants, churches etc. all changed their signs to "We beat Bama!!, Go Big Orange! or something similar.

    At the end of the game, the Great Mr. Ward gave us my favorite call ever, "The crowd goes BEEE-ZERK!"
