  • Johnnie Jones, Munford, Tn. '81-'84, is best remembered for his 66 yd. TD dash toward the end of the game vs Bama in the Vols 41-34 in 1983. Jones rushed for over 1000 yds. in both his Junior and Senior seasons. He was a threat to take it to house every time he caught the screen or ran the draw. I remember him best for his ability to catch defenders over pursuing and cut underneath leaving them grasping air. He had great games against Vandy .I've got his autographed picture hanging in my office.

  • My favorite is probably Travis Henry. Just loved to watch him run. He wasn't fast but the way people bounced off him WOW. Second would be Johnnie Jones and third would be Little Man Stewart. My favorite two running back moments are both from Mose Phillips. The checking the watch after a touchdown and the South Carolina game where he ran over, around, under and through their defense or however John Ward put it.

Travis Stephens I think is my favorite all time UT back, just because so much is put on size and measurables and he showed you it did not matter. He was a stud

^^^THIS^^^. What he lacked in size he more than made up for in heart. Stephens just had an iron will. I still have dreams about that 2001 Florida game; he was a man possessed that night. Hard believe it's been 12 years since that game...(I was only 7 years old. Man I feel old now)

  • Just going to leave this here. Pretty sure Webb was a Freshman.

Ole Miss was pretty damn good this year too. They don't even show his best run.

  • I would agree with Cobb and Webb.

  • Jonathon jones from Munford tennessee! I can still hear jw on the call when I was a kid. A real player on some real average teams. Probably my all time fave. Never forget coach jay Graham's breakaway against bama. But as far as a true "bell cow" who could carry the load, cheese was hard to beat.

I think Cobb and Webb were the height of the Vol running game. Hard to argue against Jamal Lewis being the best I ever saw play for the Vols though.

Those were the three names I thought of first, and I agree about Lewis being the best, pre-injury, of course.

"Old School"! A strong defense wins championships!

  • My favorite would be Jamal Lewis but I also love Travis Henry's punishing runs. I would say Charlie garner and Travis Stephens for scatter backs!

From Haskel Stanback to Aaron Hayden to Jay Graham, UT has a long and rich history of dominant running backs. Whether you like lightning-fast waterbugs like Travis Stephens, punishers like Jamal Lewis or all-around freaks like Chuck Webb, there is a stable full of iconic ballcarriers from which to choose.

    Who is your favorite? Why?

I'm gonna go with James "Little Man" Stewart. His diminutive size hid his dynamite skills, which would lead UT's balanced offense to new levels of dominance in the early 1990s. Even though "Little Man" shared the spotlight with Aaron Hayden and Charlie Garner, he stood tall and ran his way into the spotlight. I remember his explosiveness, his cutback skills and his ability to break out into the open on the most routine plays.

As a young UT fan, "Little Man" epitomized the Volunteer spirit and taught me that Wide Receiver U wasn't just known for passing.

    Love this series! +1

Jay Graham, Stewart, and Jamal Lewis were my favorites. Probably some bias there as I was at school when they were all there. I was a freshman when Aaron Hayden and Stewart were seniors and a senior when Lewis, Henry, and Stephens were all freshman. Jay and I were in the same class. Was definitely the golden age of running backs during that time!

As for "Littleman", he really wasn't very little despite his nickname. He was pretty big if I recall?

  • If we are truely talking about running backs and not just half backs or tail backs then you have to remember the big boys in the backfield as well. Shawn Bryson and Mose Phillips were the best big ones I've seen run. Chester Ford was the best blocking back I've seen at UT.
