  • I wasn't in attendance for my favorite memory. I will never forget being huddled around a tv, with a couple of buddies watching Wilhoit beat Florida. After he put it through the uprights, words couldnt describe the celebration that went on. It's one of those memories I'll have with me as long as I live.

  • That was a good one. The Dale Carter KO return to start 2nd half vs Florida that led to a 45-3 romp is another. Fla missing the FG in OT to loose during national champ season and Travis Henry running through, over, and around the gators to drain the swamp and win SEC East is another great one. Any beating Florida are good. My all-time favorite though is the Chuck Coleman run to beat Bama in Knoxville 1982 to snap the long loosing streak and give the 35-28 win.

  • Setting in the stands at Legion Field and watching the first play from scrimmage as Peyton hits (I believe) Joey Kent for and 80 plus yard touchdown. Everything was downhill from there for big al from that point as we went on to beat the pants off them.

    My favorite is also a rainy game: the 89 UT-Auburn game. The rain alternated from drizzle to downpour during the game. It was the last game with the Cobb-Webb backfield, and they both had a ton of yards on the ground. The final was 21-14, but it wasn't 3 TDs to 2 TDs. UT reached 21 by scoring on two safetys and a FG. Classic smash mouth football and emphasis on the kicking game.

    Remember that game very well - was there - in the TOP ROW - was so into the game my friends and I did not notice the impending downpour, and about th etime we saw the storm it arrived. Washed out the stands & UF.

    Ended up down on the Strip at a place called the "Polar BAR"...

    where two of my old 1970's UT Fort Sanders buddies ended performing an impromptu, entirely improvisational & hilarious "square dance" to Rocky TOP; passersby on the street stopped outside the doors to see what the hubbub was all about and ended up with a throng of soaked UT fans watching these guys, it was too funny to explain, & unless you happened to be there you could never really get the visual image down.

    ... Learned the value of keeping a change of clothes in the car on GAMEDAY.

    ... Also learned not to bring a brand-new vehicle and to pay attention to the weather, before, during & after, when attending Sports events in-person...

  • I've got several great memories, as I'm sure most of you do. It's hard to pick only 1! Here are my top 3 individual plays ...

    1. Florida missed FG in OT in 1998
    2. Stoerner stumbled and fumbled in 1998
    3. Peyton Manning to Joey Kent on play number 1 in 1995

    So many others. +1 to the OP for bringing up so many good memories!

  • All great memories! Was @ the 1985 Sugar Bowl, arrogant Miami fans and team before the game, couldn't find any after the game. we whipped them in all aspects of the game. Jimmy Johnson pulled Testaverde because he was getting such a beating. Ken Donahue's finest hour. Beating Paterno two years in a row was a lot of fun also. All victories over Alabama are memorable!

  • 10/27/1984 - the day I became a Vols fan. I was 7 years old at the time and grew up in PA. My parents and brother are, and were at the time, die hard PSU fans. Being the rebellious one (my Dad and brother are Yankees fans, I became a Red Sox fan and later moved to Boston make that convenient), I decided there was no way I was going to root for the Nittany Lions. Watching this game at one of my parents friends house's, I fell in love with the Vols!!!

    However, the memory of winning, just plain winning and doing it in big games. I've about forgot it's been so long. I wish I could look CBJ in the eye and tell him how long it has been since I can remember winning a big game. He just needs to know. He just needs to know that we want to beat AlaFreakinBama and that is #1 goal! :)

    Ending Miami's 26 game home winning streak in 03.
    The Wilhoit FG win over Florida in 04.
    The 5 OT win in Alabama in 03.
    The 6 OT win against Arkansas on the Witten TD in 2002.
    The 2007 4 OT win at Kentucky to get the Vols to Atlanta.
    The 2005 Katrina Game in Death Valley.

  • I am 71 so my memories go back a few years. During my freshman year at UT in 1959 the Vols stopped Heisman winner Billy Cannon on the half-yard line as he tried for 2 points and the Big Orange upset LSU 14-13. Also some of you younger fans don't remember how the Vols man-handled Bammer in the 50's. Tennessee shut out the Tide three consecutive years in 1955-56-57 while Coach Majors was playing. Never was done before or after that time period. Oh for some good old days!

  • We've had a lot of these threads, so I'm going to recall one of my personal favorites that very few will remember. It was 1979 and I covered the Vols in those days. It came one week after one of the most humiliating losses in the Majors era, a 13-7 loss to Rutgers, a school few Tennesseans had ever heard of in those days.

    The Vols fell to 4-3 and that loss dropped them out of the Top 20. Thirteenth-ranked Notre Dame rolled into town the next week. It was only the second time the two schools had played, as the Irish had won the previous year in South Bend, 31-17.

    But this day was different. The Vols struck early and often, pasting Notre Dame, 40-18. John Ward had a great call I remember well, "Hubert Simpson has four!" He meant touchdowns. Simpson was a bruising fullback from McMinn County and that game was the highlight of his career.

    The best UT play EVER was Alan Cockrell taking a knee in the victory formation against Numbr 2 Alabama and Bear Bryant to end the 11-game losing streak.

    I cried like a baby that had just been spanked.
