Final thoughts for awhile

  • This is my final post for at least the next month. That said even after today, although I agree Dooley is gone, I do not want to hire someone simply to fire him. I do agree this is perhaps the ideal time if you can hire one of the top 3-5 names out there. If you can get the right guy you have to do it. You have to have stipulations that Jay G is retained, and it has to be a slam dunk big name hire with a HUGE performance based salary and a very low buyout in the event of mediocrity or worse. The wrong hire with another firing and buyout will lead to paying 3 head coaches and cripple this program for the next decade. Dooley is done at UT I concede that, however if we can't make the proper hire now; (no Kirby Smart, Tommy tuberville, or Charlie Strong) we need a hire with zero or as close to zero questions marks as possible and of the above listed I guess Strong is the only one that would even be on my top ten list. If not a very little to zero doubt minimal risk hire less long term damage would be made by keeping DD and spending the next 13 months personally without the added expense of a search committee contacting every "sure" thing, proven head candidate in the country. Best case you get ie; Gruden or Cower or a very compare able coach to listen enough, and you spend enough time with the money men, to reach a deal getting who we need, be it in December or June. If we hire just to hire we will be paying Dooley and Staffs buyout along with their replacements buyout combined with the right hire we finally make for a total of 3 staffs all on payroll for one job. One mediocre year of recruiting under Dooley will not hurt us as bad as another bad hire. While I agree the job is now much better than it was firing Dooley no matter why after every expert said it was a 5 year rebuild. No coach expecting a small amount of rope to be able to implement his system and the growing pains that must be expected whether they happen or not will take this unrealistic job. We were turned down for this very reason in our last search. I agree we need to hire a new coach but it has to be a 5* coach and I don't agree with hiring a 3* or even marginal improvement just to appease everyone and fire Dooley. Please feel free to agree or not and explain why and if you see any flaws in my opinion please explain. Go Vols!!!!!

    Consider how low season ticket sales and donations would be if retain Dooley.

    Not even close to the direct we need to head. I was at the game today and it looked to be about an 80,000 crowd or better. If we want to be a championship team, don't settle for less. Now is the time to make the right hire. Nothing less. I think the new coach will decide if we keep any coach. WE MUST RECRUIT.

    Agree,The hire has to be the right one this time, but THERE IS A RIGHT ONE OUT THERE! - probably many more than one. We just have to make that person say yes. Look at what our hated rival to the geographic south of us did - REFUSED to say no to the person they wanted and knew could take them where they wanted to be.

    Prove it like Dooley has proved it? You can't do it any worse than Dooley. We are 1-13 in the last 14 SEC games, 0-6 this year, you cannot get any worse statistically so we can hire anybody and it will be an upgrade on what we have currently.

  • I agree. We need to pay a proven winner whatever it takes to get him here. I hate to say it, but like Bama did with Saban. Who is that? I don't know, but I think Hart can handle it. He was at Bama when they got Saban. This hire is hugely important and we can't miss on it. We have everything recruits want, I think, just not a record of winning they want to see. So, I hope Hart takes the time he needs and makes a slam dunk hire.

  • Guys I am not trolling. I am an Ohio State fan that has lived around Nashville for almost 30 years. I hear radio shows talk about this subject seemingly every day and all I hear is that Tennessee has to make a "big splash", "big name", "high profile" coaching hire if they do fire Dooley, which I think they should. Just as coaches have to find the 2 or 3 star recruits that turn into all americans, the AD's have to find the lesser known coaches that turn into championship type coaches on the BCS level.

    When Ohio State replaced John Cooper, many "big names" were mentioned. They ended up hiring a guy from what was known back then as D-1AA Youngstown State named Jim Tressel. I was fully disappointed in the hire at the time even though he had won National Championships there. I didn't even know whoe he was. Then at halftime of an OSU basketball game he was introduced and made the statement that the community would be proud of the players in the classroom, in the community and most especially on the playing field in 310 days in ann arbor _ichigan when they beat the hated rival. Regardless of how things ended with Tressel, he was a hire that understood Ohio State football and their tradition, rivals and how to recruit the State of Ohio and nationally. Tennesse needs to do a thorough search and find the coach that is right for their situation at this time. UT needs to dive into the deep end of the coaching pool to find the next head coach.
