Firing Dooley Would Be Ignorant

  • hdrizzle21 said...

I'll be tuned in tonight to see my top candidate play. Such a well coached team that plays for 4 quarters and wins tight games. I'm pretty sure they can catch a pooch kickoff to. Go Cards, Go Charlie Strong.

If Gruden is a no go, Strong would be my next choice. He will win no matter where he is.

IMO - It flies in the face of every rational agenda for progress and success. I've said it before: It's not an x's and o's issue... it's not even a recruiting issue now. It starts with understanding how we got where we were in the first place. All in favor of setting us back (at least) another year, fire Dooley.

Considering the number of teams that are recruiting better than us - including Vanderbilt - you have an interesting definition for "progress and success".

Gentry Estes, who used to cover Tennessee and now covers Georgia for 247, said that Dooley's recruiting was considered around the SEC as "good" but not "excellent". I expect excellent and so should everyone else.

  • We've lost 11 of our last 12 SEC games. How much more can we be set back?

Dooley is probably going to be our Mike Shula. A guy that brought stability, started the turn around, but wasn't able to get over the hump. We just have to go find our Saban.

Or he could take 4-5 yrs to turn it around like the GreAt and Powerful Saban needed at Mich St. Oh yeah, and that woeful record of Saban's was in the Big 10, not in the strongest time in the history of the SEC!

  • I may be wrong but I think Gruden was approached before Dooley and he was happy where he was. The SEC will chew you up, just set back and read the entries. Gruden has a great job now and probably is making bank. Do you really think he would come over and chance going 6-6 or worse his first year and then be crucified in the media. Expectations would be so high for him he could never live it up. With all the negative going against Dooley, he would be nuts to coach here. I like him but I doubt he will come to UT. We havent even given this guy a real shot at winning. What, did we really think with all the athletes Dooley lost that we would win the National championship 3 years in. Give him a year and if he gets better every year then we got ourselves a coach.

  • We're no closer to beating the top SEC teams that we were three years ago. That's what Hart said after the Bama game and that is why Dooley is done.

  • It's not that there aren't competent coaches who have struggled initially, there are. And it's not that the situation Dooley walked into was great, it wasn't. But this team is dysfunctional and Dooley has done nothing to buy himself more time. One upset, or not losing to Kentucky, or even playing Bama close last weekend, and we're not having this conversation. Unfortunately every opportunity Tennessee has under Dooley to take a step forward ends up the same way, with us on our butts and everyone else laughing.

  • You can keep Dooley without giving him extension. No need to reward this season, and you either extend next year after he gets a big win or you have bought yourself another year with a top 25 recruiting class coming in and more financial stability.

Vandy also did not out recruit us last year. Stop. It is a lie.

I now understand why people are talking themselves into Gruden as being a possibility, because hiring anything less than a Super Bowl winning coach makes our fanbase look absurd. Three years ago this was a 4-5 year rebuilding job, but we want this coach out after 2.5 years. You can't bring in Strong, Smart, or another good coach, because if they go 6-6 next year, people will be calling for their heads too. Which means in 2014, we are going into a make or break year with a coach who has had one year to recruit his own players for his system.

  • Maybe Wes or Ryan can comment on this or have in another thread but I've read where some people that have been at practices every day are saying the team just isn't practicing with any pep on their step and enthusiasm. Have y'all noticed that any this week?

Gruden isn't a realistic option. All the crazies who actually think Gruden will come to UT over the NFL need to hit me up bc I own ocean front property in Nashville close to Grudens residence and I'm sellin for cheap

The only Gruden we may see here is Jon's brother Jay

  • Look, I'm really tired of worrying about who our next coach is, and the Dooley is gone stuff (although it is entertaining to read)I think what ever DH decides to do about our coach(es) will be what he thinks is the right thing to do. I'm NOT a fire Dooley guy,and I think Dooley has done a great job stabilizing the program and getting some great athletes here. But if DH says a change is needed then I support him and the decision. If he thinks Dooley needs another year, I support him, he makes the changes not us. And sometimes I get mad and say he sucks but then I remember he is not the one throwing INTs. or fumbling or missing tackles so let's support Dooley and DH until a change is made. JMO, I support the program as a whole.

Jay is a hotter and cheaper NFL option that Jon right now. Lots of talk about him being an NFL HC next year, and it won't cost you 6M a year.

  • The fact of the matter is that all we can is whats on the field. We've got a solid WR core, a decent running game, our o-line is NFL caliber, and our D-line isn't that bad either. But honestly I'm sick of hearing that the reason our season went to crap was because of injuries....do you think that would fly at Bama? "Oh, sorry fans, our starting Free safety and OLB have injuries so you guys are gonna have to settle on a 6-6 season." I don't think so.

Also, none of us knows what's gonna happen, just like everyone else we've heard the rumors. Gruden in/Dooley out has been the greatest hysteria since Shannon, but we didn't know until the ink dried on that one so we'll just have to wait again.

As far as Dooley is concerned, he's a good coach. He's not ready for the caliber of teams that are in the SEC right now, if you put him in the Big East with Strong he'd probably do really well.

The SEC is feast or famine and no offense but the Tennessee fan base is turning into the Hunger games. We've got all these fans cursing each other and throwing each other under the bus all over rumors that everyone takes as truth, STOP. We have to Join together if we're gonna rise to the top again. Whether be Gruden, Dooley, or George Quarles I'm a VFL.

Moving on to what we know:
    1) All boosters were in the Haslam box with Peyton during Bama.
    2) Multiple reports coming out that Hart had all coaches fly back with him after MSU game.
3)Gruden will be on TV Monday regardless of what happens to the Vols tomorrow.
4)Dooley is still coaching tomorrow, so put on your orange trousers one more time(at least) and root for these kids to win.
    5) We all bleed orange, that's why we pay for this information on the board. I love the Vols as much as anyone, but this is getting ridiculous. We need to join together guys or it's going to be another bumpy November...

I'm so sick of the "20 hours a week isn't enough for Gruden" statements. Says who???????? Gruden, or you? That has got to be the most baseless argument to Gruden not coming that I have heard.

Obviously your unaware of the workaholic Gruden is. He spends countless hours in the filmroom with his QBs. He is a film junkie and has a very deep, extensive and complicated offensive philosophy. It's not something that's kindly learned with a 20 hr a week limit. Why do you think he's stayed in the tv booth for so long? Bc he has no interest in college, makes 7 figures working 1 day a week and has a NFL track record. He flirted with Tennessee last time when we had a bottomless checkbook, but now with limited funds you think he will come here? It's simple, he's gunna stay in the booth making a Mil+ working 1 day a week or get an NFL job where he has freedom with his players and nobody lookin over his shoulder makin sure he's following rules.

If you don't think Tennessee should fire Dooley, that's fine but I can't follow your argument. Since there is very little evidence to support Dooley, you seem to instead want to attack Gruden and paint him as bad/unrealistic for TN. Again there is little evidence to support this, so you've turned to false information like "He'd get us in trouble for spending to much time with the team" and "Boosters aren't gunna reach in for millions over a 5/6 yr period." How do you know Gruden is going to go over the NCAA mandated practice times or what the big-money boosters are thinking?

I'm not attacking Gruden or painting him as bad. Hes won a Super Bowl, obviously he can coach. But it is unrealistic to suggest he will come to UT. Read my post above and it explains the 20 hr rule. He's been in the NFL a long time, commentates the NFL making a Mil+ a yr working 1 day a week. There's a reason he hasn't got back into college after all these yrs, he's an NFL guy and thats where he will stay. This has nothing to do with Dooley, its for all you April babies who honestly hope and believe UT will hire Gruden. UT would get Petrino before Gruden

Petrino over Gruden... Wow... We learned our lesson the first time we hired an "outrageous" coach... See "Lane Kiffin" for that. Oh and your local mattress store...

  • Dooley is a bad football coach. There is not a single fanbase in this conference, not one, who would rather have Dooley than who they currently have. That includes 1-6 Chizik at Auburn and the replacements to be named later at Kentucky and Arkansas. Other than the fact the guy is currently coaching at Tennessee what do you possibly see in the guy to make you think he deserves more time? He certainly hasn't done anything to earn it on the field.

Yes, some jobs are long term rebuilds, and yes sometimes even a good coach takes time to turn it around. But Dooley has shown no evidence of being that good coach. None of the former players at UT are standing up for him, the insiders characterize the players on the team as caring about losing their position coaches but not overly caring about Dooley. Multiple people have said he is a difficult person to work with, and that he isn't the sort of guy to inspire devotion from his players, I mean lets pretend he comes back next year, is it going to be with Sunseri? How many position coaches does he lose, you saw what happened last year when his seat wasn't half this hot? Do all the potential pros say "Screw this" and get the hell out of town? It's entirely possible bringing him back next year leaves us at 4-8 or so, and unless they extend him he's not going to be able to recruit at even his own mediocre level. I just don't get where the faith or the optimism comes from. It's possible if not probable that by bringing him back next year we create a similar situation to the one he walked into after Kiffin.

No one could do better in recruiting here than Dooley? So 11th in the SEC is as good as it gets? I tend to disagree there. There's no way Vandy should be out recruiting us 2 years in a row.

Vandy did NOT outrecruit UT last year, and there's still three months plus until NSD, so it's hard to really pin down any recruiting class right now. If you don't believe me, go look at the final rankings for 2012. Tennessee was 20, Vanderbilt was 49...

(Link works, It just doesn't do the preview correctly)

Additionally, Tennessee is currently ranked ahead of Vandy for 2013 , and is at 9th in the SEC, not 11th...
