First Vol memory?

  • Since I'm new to the board I apologize if this had been previously discussed.

Mine was the 92 Florida game. I was 7. I don't remember a whole lot except they were ranked higher then us like top 5. I remember going up 14-0 and doing summer saults on the couch.

  • Mine first memory is listening to John Ward and Bill Anderson during the mid 70's in a loss to bama. My first awesome memory is listening to them call the '82 bama game that ended the streak. I will never forget that feeling i got in the pit of my stomach as he counted down the last seconds of the game.

Moved to SC when I was 4 yrs old, so UT sports info was not very common, but I remember I had to have a jersey with # 44....Bobby Majors was the man!!

  • Watching the "68 Orange Bowl vs Oklahoma on a black and white Philco with my dad. It was a heartbreaker, but I became a VFL that night.

  • I remember laying in the floor with my father playing with GI Joes while listening to John Ward on the radio. Probably 83 - 84.

  • 1957 and my Dad and I were listening on the radio.

  • My first memory was when my father and I went to a UT vs. Vanderbilt game when I was 4. It's actually really funny. There were these two drunk guys in front of us and they were SO annoying. (Vandy fans: yes they do exist) They kept screaming in everyone's faces and spilling beer on people. Well at halftime my father got a hotdog and was trying to put his mustard on it, but the pack wouldn't open. He kept squeezing it until finally the pack exploaded and made a zig zag on one of the big drunk guys backs. They didn't notice it happened. A woman behind us whispered to my dad, "I won't tell them if you won't." It was great haha.

It would have to be when I was 6 and me and my dad watched the Gators get off the bus at Gate 10 before the 1990 game. Vols were ranked 5th and Gators were ranked 9th and it was Steve Spurrier's first year as the Head Ball Coach in Gainesville. Highlights....

  • 1965 Tennessee vs. UCLA in Memphis. Dewey Warren, the Swamp Rat, led the Vols to victory over the Rose Bowl bound Bruins on a controversial TD late in the game. It's truly one of the greatest victories in Tennessee history and the Swamp Rat, who kept playing despite a pulled groin, gave one of the gutsiest performances in UT football history. I was hooked.

Best thing to come out of Alabama: I-59 North

  • Mine was the 97 Florida game. I was mad beyond belief watching us lose that game. Later that year I went to the Georgia game and the atmosphere and celebration that took place in the stadium hooked me for life.

  • I was 9 years old, growing up in Eastern Kentucky we got all the Knoxville channels despite it being crazy Cat fan country. I was home for a snow day from school and watched press conference with Johnny Majors and the Sugar Vols. Until then all I knew about football was that it made my UK loving father curse a lot more than usual. Same year I asked my dad for a UT shirt and he refused to allow an orange t shirt in his house, but I was hooked.

"Count it down with me. Five, four, three, two, one. The national champion is clad in Big Orange!"

  • Hmm, I remember watching several, several games at our house when I was younger. My very first game though was in Birmingham when we played Alabama in....95 or 96. Anyways, we kicked the crap outta alabama that night, but my best memory of that day was eating all this food at this woman's house where we had paid them to watch our trucks. Anyways, the food was heavenly. I remember these black guys trying to park without paying the people. They refused to pay, thought $20 was too much. Well, we walked back from the game, and the black guy's car was absolutely tore apart. I mean, no wheels, no hood, no radio, you name it. The dudes come back, and he was shocked. "What happened to my car?" "Well, you didn't pay us to watch it". "Mother*********!!!" I remember it like it was yesterday. It took every ounce of strength we had left not to laugh, haha.

  • Being from Canada, I never followed college football until I moved to Georgia in 2004. In 2005, I had a friend take me to my first ever game, the opener against UAB. I enjoyed it, but by no means was sold. I somewhat followed UT that year, but nowhere near how I follow them now. The following year I went to the Florida game. That was it. Even though we lost, the atmosphere was amazing, and I've been hooked ever since!

  • When I was 5 or 6 I wanted to play football. My mom didn't want me to, but she said I could play flag football. I told her no if I couldn't tackle and play for the Vols I didn't want to play.

That season was my first as a VFL, and obviously the best memories were of that game. Johnny Mills was everywhere, snagging the Swamp Rat's passes.

  • My first Vol memory was when my dad took me to a game against South Carolina, and Tyrone Hines returned a blocked field goal for a td, we also had a fake field goal for a td in that game if I'm not mistaken and Joey Kent was instantly my favorite player. After that game I saved my allowances until i could get an 11 jersey and a 47 jersey and I've been a fan for life. tennesseekoolaid
