Five Big Things: Jones' UT presser

  • fasteddy41 said...

Do you think maybe Hart should buy out the Oregon game contract? If not, the Vols could have 2 quick losses next Sept (Fla and Oregon) especially if the big three (B P & H) leave for the pros. Gonna be another couple of lean years for the Vols but I think BJ is the man to turn it around. GO BIG ORANGE

No way. First, save the running for on the field. Imagine what a win would do for building confidence! Second, we have done enough buying for a while. Time to earn respect. Go Vols!

  • sure hope I'm wrong about him, but he seems in over his head to me, and was really trying hard to overcompensate with braggadocio. I don't need to hear another time that you won four conference championships, and I certainly don't believe that your team was "the story of the year" in college football or that your program was the most successful in college football..those type of patently absurd empty boasts come across to me as defensive statements trying to convince people you belong.. Don't mean to be so harsh right out of the box, but I'm not going to pretend that was a brilliant presser. And then I hear he is not going to keep Pittman? So far, I gotta say, this is not filling me with confidence.

What would you have preferred that he say? Thanks for the opportunity, i'm not sure how i'll do, my past really isnt very good, maybe we can do some things here that will make people happy, but i really dont know if we will.

Come on dude, Gruden isn't coaching us. Stoops isn't coming. Strong is still in L'ville. Gundy was never leaving Ok. St. CBJ is our coach. He's had success at both stops he's been. He's won 4 conference championships (there it is again for ya). As i said to you in another post and many have said before, staff turnover is always going to happen, particularly when you take over a team that just went 5-7.

Being negative and pouting will do nothing now. He's the coach for the next 6 years.

Absolutely Not!!! This is Tennessee! First and Foremost Oregon may not have Chip Kelly due to sanctions and the possibility he goes to NFL. Second it will say to the team right away, hey we don't believe in you! And there is talent on this team! Enough to win?? Who knows that's why you play the game but certainly everyone expects a loss so no one should be jumping ship on Coach Jones after that!!

Agree 200%. However some have not boarded the ship to jump off if we do lose those. I just dont understand this.

  • I was relieved and excited after press conf. The more I hear about this guy, the more I like him!
    Go Vols!

  • I thought it was odd how he said he grew up watching Tennessee football. Really? A michigan kid watched early 1980s Tennessee ball? Hmmm.

Sorry guys . . but I think AD's should be held accountable for their blunders and the fact that we ended up with Butch Jones and are paying him foolish money qualifies as first rate blunder. Better than Dooley but, all in all, a completely blow opportunity to energize the fan base and right the program.

Here is what the other side is saying about Jones -

He was calm, cool and confident with some tough questions. Can you blame him for pointing out his body of work when essentially being asked if he was SEC material. Great presser and I'm now excited about the hire. Bring on Butch and a new staff.

  • The thing I like most about him is the bravado - not Kiffin-level obnoxious but certainly believes in himself and his system. He really thinks he is going to win, and win big, in Knoxville and that's refreshing. Do we think DD EVER really thought we could beat Bama or his precious Georgia? Jones' confidence in himself and his players will be infectious, ala Bruce Pearl, and Lord knows this team (and fan base) could use some swagger right about now. Welcome Coach Jones!!

Look, i get it, he's a new hire, and like all of these press conferences with new hires, they want to come off energetic and passionate and "excited for the opportunity".. And I am absolutely fine with that. What left me a bit cold was the UNNECESSARY bluster and gross misstatements. "Our program (referring to his program at UC) was the best in the country"? Really? UC? With a 9-3 record and playing Duke in some crap bowl and UC was the best program in the nation? Why say that? It makes him sound delusional and defensive. His team was "the story of the year" in college football..? Not Notre Dame, not Johhny Football, but a 9-3 UC team that couldnt win the Big East outright and lost to Toledo? Again, why say something like that? UC was NOT the story of the year in college football, and him saying that seems self inflated and, again, delusional.

Nothing wrong with referencing your successes, but glossing them like you were Knute Rockne, or repeating them over and over, doesnt give me a good feeling. Im pretty sure there is a way to highlight your accomplishments without aggrandizement.

I do agree that negativity accomplishes nothing, and he is our coach, and i have to like it. HOWEVER, that does not mean i have to eat spam and call it filet.
