ATLANTA — The govols247 staff listed five of the most crucial questions UT had to answer Friday against N.C. State. Here’s how UT answered those questions in a 35-21 win.

  • Nice article, Wes. Hopefully we continue to build on all of the positive things we saw in the game and correct and improve negative. Excited to see what happens this season.

  • Gotta Chuckle when Bray gave Amerson a "pat" on the helmet after he made a good play last night. It was almost like he was saying "good play finally Mr Amerson we kind of owned you tonight".. As intense as that game was on both sides, Bray was playing "loose" and made some great calls out there on hitting his receivers and yet throwing it away instead of trying to force the ball into coverage..

  • Wes you stated,

"Sophomore Devrin Young, who was consistently praised throughout preseason camp, surprisingly remained a small part of the attack throughout Friday night. "

What I noticed from Devrin, was that every single punt and kick that he fielded was done so with decisive, confidence. He was well positioned and made timely fair catch signals. Not once did I see anything that made me nervous about receiving kicks and punts --- which is a total reversal from last year! Last year it was kind of a "what's gonna happen this time" every time they kicked to us.

It was like, even though they made some mistakes and blew a some adjustments and calls, they still played with a different level of mental stability.

Although our season will have it's bumps, I feel like the cloud of the past is gone and our team is playing and THINKING like the proud Vol players we yearn to see. And I think its due to Dooley's attitude of perseverance and determination. Do all the small things right, and the larger things begin to take care of themselves.

Lastly, I was proud to be in the Dome last night and see the strong Vol Nation represented so well.

Man, that was fun. I'm proud of our team :)

  • Where were those officials from, Mars? The review on Bray's should-have-been TD lasted all of 10 seconds, and anyone in the Dome saw the crucial shot on the big screen, with the ball clearly breaking the plain. Reminded me of the inepitude of the MCB and those delusional Big 10 officials. I won't even get into all the missed holding calls.

  • The good thing about this entire game is that all of our issues and very fixable like some of the bloWn calls in the secondary I believe the coaches will watch the game film and can make the right adjusments and We can move on

  • Good analysis Wes, Ryan, Kevin. Lots of work to do, but it's easy to see the improvements this team has made over the offseason. Debth at LB will be a concern all year. The coaching staff has to figure out how to replace Lathers and stay in the 3-4. With Lathers out, it looked like we were in the 4-3 for most of the 2nd half. I expect the secondary to get better throughout the year. The DL and LB play was solid. The O-line has got to get some push. I don't know if all of the running woes can be put on Neal. Didn't look like too many holes there. I know they want him to stick it in there, but, to me, it looked like he was running into the lineman's rearend everytime. I thought Bray was better than solid. The WRs were better than solid. Hunter missed a few. I thought the ball he dropped on the long pass was just as critical as the 4th down drop. All and all, a good start with room for improvement. Right now, I say we have as good a shot as anybody to win the East.

  • I think we shoulod wait and see how the other East teams will play in week 1 and 2, Vandy and USC we alredy saw and I am not afraid about them and our running game needs to improve....

  • What do you know about Herman Lather's injury?

  • Did I see that right, McCullers (nose tackle) was most of the time not on the field in the 2nd half?

  • I think Lane earned the starting RB job for now - he had a much more north/south style we need

  • i Will give Palardy credit for one thing and that is the guy is confident.. whether he is a good kicker (i think he will prove to be so) or not he seems very confident in what he thinks he can do.. Cameras showed him last night really wanting a chance at a kcik that we decided to go for on 4th

    Matt_O5

  • still concerned about our kicking game but too happy to complain about anything today ; this team is only going to get better with time

  • I'm excited. 1. Tyler Bray is the freakin man. That drive in the 3rd quarter where we converted on like 3 3rd downs in a row with passes was something that makes you feel confident in your quarterback. 2. kicking game did look a lot better. 3. DEFENSE CAUSED PROBLEMS AND FORCED TURNOVERS. We aren't perfect obviously but we are a very dangerous team to anyone. Welcome to UT Mr. CP!!!

  • The D was forcing the play like nothing I have seen from UT in years. Way to teach Coach Sal

    clrstory

  • All the teams issues were revealed with clarity and thats what we will benefit from most. Against Cincy last year, I think anyone can say it was a false feeling of confidence. When you blow out an opponent who doesn't show your faults it hurts you more on game 1 than it does help you, no one needs confidence on week 1 as bad as they do improvements and with coach SAL that should be what our team gets. This game was different, N.C.S. definitely was at the least capable of showing our defensive and offensive struggles/issues which is a huge positive to work and improve on this week, to put those into play against GA State and to really test our ability on week 3. Best luck to everyone and go UT!!
