Forget UT and AR: why hasn't ANYONE offered Petrino?

  • I know there's a lot of ambivalence about Petrino to UT, and obviously Arkansas is off the board, but isn't it weird that of all the open jobs Petrino isn't strongly connected with ANY of them? When I say connected, I mean to say I don't know of serious contact or offers between Petrino and any of the open jobs, even though the prevailing wisdom is that he'll jump at any reasonable job.

    Has Bobby burned away all his juju? Is there some other flaw beyond the obvious that's keeping ADs away from him?

    He's got a lot of baggage, so jobs that would otherwise be on 'his level' are well beyond him now. There is a level of job he just flat won't take, probably, like an Arkansas State level job or Georgia State.

    He's fits a Kentucky-sized job now, but most of those AD's aren't going to take the risk with him, at least not yet. He may have to sit out a year or two, like Leach did, in order to have a shot.

  • No major AD can touch him at this point IMO. The affair gets the attention, but the real problem was hiring the mistress. That put the school at risk, and I can't see many ADs risking the primary economic driver of their department to someone with that type of baggage.

    and because he is not some one you want at university to train young men. most of them know how to chase women on their own.

  • I agree with all of you. I think there's a lot of "he's a winner so who cares if he's a deadbeat" chatter out there that ignores the actual legal danger he caused for UArk.

  • We all know the story on Petrino. So here's why Hart should hire the guy:

    1) He learned his lesson about jumping to the NFL. Not a risk to do that again.

    2) He's a winner. Look at what he did at Louisville and Arkansas.

    3) He did not get Ark or Lou in hot water with the NCAA.

    4) He did have an affair and thats not a NCAA issue. Putting her on the payroll and lying about it was the problem. Don't believe he will make that mistake again.

    5) I believe the guy is ready to prove he is worthy and will keep clean to do so. He knows he must rebuild his reputation and knows all eyes will be on him. If Hart tells him this is his chance, go do it, he will bust his AZZ to do so.

    6) He can be brought on board at a value price because of the above and does not have a buyout at another school.

    I believe there is less risk and more upside in going this route than with Gruden. Gruden will break the bank, have an ego that may rub some at UT wrong, or jump to the NFL again. Plus, there is no guarantee he will be a success in college. No record to evaluate. Yes, he would have a huge impact in recruiting but that doesn't equate to a winning record.

  • Your 1, 4, 5, and 6 assume that Petrino has scruples, which he has clearly shown that he does not have. If you worked at a university (which I would assume you do not -- but I reserve the right to be wrong), you would know that administrators are much more conservative and care more about the survival of the university more than the football program. That even goes for the idiot/genius Gee at Ohio State. Petrino MAY not make the same mistakes again, but you know the old saying. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." But fool me thrice???

    That said, someone will give him a shot. Hopefully, he really has learned his lesson. I'm not so sure I'd be willing to bet though.
