Fulmer

  • Is Phil Fulmer in the mix to return as our coach?

  • And before the flaming starts, I haven't seen anybody claim that Fulmer is washed up. He might still have some magic left in him, but we moved on at Tennessee, and we should keep it that way.

  • I will bet we would have been MUCH MUCH better off had Hammy given Fulmer the $$$$ that he gave Kiffin, Dooley, and is talked about with the new coach for assistants.

And although I once thought Fulmer needed to go...I now think it was a hasty move and he should have been given an opportunity HE DESERVED to go out and get a newer more dynamic staff.

Folks forget...Fulmer won the SEC EAst title in 2007 and was fired in 2008.

  • I was "that guy" calling for Fulmer's head. 5-7 was a disgrace. Lately, it's commonplace.

I thought we needed to move on from Fulmer at the time. However, at the time I didn't realize how incompetent our former AD was.

  • If I had a time machine, I would take us all back to 1998 and keep us there.

  • I was that guy too InVols. I thought he needed to go and get a young dynamic coach to liven things up. Well, I got my wish and it didn't work out so well. I then thought well lets try this again. That didn't go so well either. Then I looked back at the Fulmer record. It was interesting what I found.

Only two schools have won more SEC titles since 1992 when the division was formed. And Tennessee won their since 1997. I got worried because of the arrival of Saban. Maybe others did too. But can you imagine what might have happened of Hammy told Fulmer...find you an OC and here is 1.5m to do it with. Isn't that what Monte Kiffin got? There was some things about Chavis that I didn't care for, but LSU seems to be fine with him.

I am just saying...me and others at times are too impatient. Fulmer deserved at least one chance to restaff with the right financial backing and it couldn't have been worse than what we have seen the past 4 years.

I often thought that Dooley was the unluckiest coach I had ever seen in my 57 years. The only break he got in 3 years was in his hip. I have often thought the program was cursed. Well maybe it was...maybe we got what we deserved because we didn't give a man that deserved it a chance to fix it.

Of all the coaches on the board...name one that has .01% of love for UT that Fulmer has...and pride in the traditions. Of all the 5 leaders on the hotboard now: Fisher, Gundy, Strong, Fedora, Golden, and maybe I should add Jones....Fulmer has 98 more wins in the SEC than all of them put together.

I never thought I would come back around to this...but it is where I am. I would much prefer Fulmer to the mishmash of what we are looking at. One last thing...if a coach was at say Arky, Miss State, or even Auburn, that had the record of 1 NC, 2 Sec Championships, 5 SEC East titles, and 98 wins in the SEC....would we give them a serious look it they wanted to coach at UT? I think we all know that answer.

Correct, we moved on. We wouldn't be where we re now if we hadn't moved on.

Its not a stupid question until you ask it.

  • I love Fulmer. But, why are no schools trying to hire him? Very strange considering he was so successful here. I would take him now over Fisher and some of the others.

    UT judge

  • Puddin, Fulmer was a huge step forward. We have been tanking from the day he left. And Judge, it could have something to do with his buyout but there have been schools interested. He could be coaching somewhere else right now if he had wanted to.

A lot of us considered Gruden the dream hire. Now that its over, we're moving on to other candidates. It's like a presidential race… lots of folks throwing support behind their guy, then changing it up as candidates start to drop out.

He was never going to beat Saban and he was never going to beat Urbie. As the newer coaches came into the league he didn't change going forward. He was great his day, but his time had already passed.
