Fun times at Sam & Andy's Roman Room

  • George Captain was one of my big time drinking buddies back in '59 when we were both freshmen at E. Tenn State up in J.C. TN. He was a fun guy and good pal. His cousin was also named George. They were the sons of Sam and Andy Captain. The 3 three of us knocked back a bunch of cheap beer together and listened to the Kingston Trio. Naturally, I flunked out of ETSU, but finally finished up at UT. Great memories with great buddies are never forgotten, are they?

  • For what it's worth, after ETSU, I enlisted in and served 3 yrs with the 82nd Airborne and the 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa and Vietnam before returning to UT. No GI bill in those days, so worked full time and graduated from UT in 3 yrs. But never heard from George again. Drink better beer now. Loved the Vols football since I was a kid.

  • George is still around. He lives North Knoxville/Fountain City area. I've seen the thread about Gus's on the board this weekend and I didn't wanna bomb the thread, but Sam and Andy's was the best place on the strip before it closed. Granted I'm biased because I practically grew there while my dad was working there.

George was one of the greatest bartenders ever. And he was one of the hardest-working guys on the planet. He was always there, and it always seemed like he was working the whole room single-handed, but you never had to wait long for service.

    And he always remembered you.

God bless George and anyone associated with Sam & Andy's and the Roman Room.

  • Thank you for that. Almost brought a tear. It's been a long time ago. He and I had special times sharing our youth. For the record I'll bet we have a good Tennessee football year in '13. We're overdue and ready aren't we?

  • A 1983 Graduate myself. Man do I love Sam and Andy's!!! Nothing like a turkey on white with smoked Cheddar and mayo after a late night on the hill!! Thanks for the memory!!

  • The pizza burger was the best and George was the best bartender. I would love to eat there just one more time.

  • I miss that place, the pay phone there was my office away from the office. No telling how many Vol burgers I went though. Good times!
