Got Accepted into UT today

  • North Carrick was a hoot my freshman year, 1974.

  • I would not recommend Morrill hall, but only because I didn't think it was very conducive to academic success. Fun was had, sure, but living off campus worked better for me.

  • Congrats! I myself chose my dorm late for freshman year, so I got placed in a single in Melrose, which isn't even a dorm anymore. But I'd definitely suggest N. Carrick or Reese. Presidential court is one of the best places to meet a lot of people quick. You'll have a good time there. Also, I remember Hess being closer to classes, but a crazy place to live, which is why it's known as "the zoo". And, if by some crazy stroke of chance, you can possibly live in Gibbs, do it. I don't think non-athlete freshman can get in there, but I lived there my sophomore year, and it was great. Best food on campus (steak every Thursday, and gator served the Friday before Florida games) and you get to meet the athletes pretty easily.

  • Congrats, man. Go to class! It's too easy not to. That being said, you'll be fine staying in either Reese or N. Carrick. The bathroom situation is much nicer in those two than anywhere else on campus and trust me that goes a long way.

  • Welcome to UT man. Congrats on the acceptance. I'm a senior here now. Put Gibbs as first choice and hope you get it- that's where I lived freshman year. Other than that, I had a lot of buddies in Reese that enjoyed it.

  • Anybody else on here live in Melrose back in the 80's when it was a dorm? Holy Chit, that place was a dump! We walk through the courtyard after every game and my wife and daughter just shake their heads. Scary thing is that it doesn't look any different today than it did 25 years ago.

I'm coming from Southeast Missouri and will likely know nobody, so what is the board's recommendation on where to live?

    South Carrick and Humes if you could pull it. But most likely you should go with Reese or North Carrick.

  • Congratulations. As a UT grad (2006-2010) I spent my first 2 years in Reese Hall. They were wonderful years I'll never forget. I had friends in N. Carrick and Hess who enjoyed their tenures, so I would say you cannot miss, although I recommend Reese/N. Carrick only because the Presidential Courtyard is a great gathering place for students.

    I'll never forget when I got my acceptance notification to UT. As an out-of-stater (in NC) I received my notice on Christmas Eve, 2005. It was the best Christmas gift I've ever received.

  • Congratulations. I graduated in August and I'm already trying to figure out how to go back for grad school hah. Always rented a place off campus but I doubt you can go wrong with any of the Halls.

Would highly recommend trying to get in at Reese or Carrick - the Presidential Complex is a great way to meet new friends.

  • Congrats! I was in Gibbs in the late 90s. At the time, it had the nicest rooms, best food, close to Thompson Boling, and was cool to see all the players and coaches coming through. Negatives are it is kinda isolated from the rest of campus and the surface parking lot had really tight spaces.

    The biggest shock I got was when we took our daughter for her orientation tour. They told us Hess Hall was the toughest to get into and it was mostly honors students. It's come a long way from the Zoo.

  • I lived in both Carrick and Reese back in the day, and I preferred Carrick due to closer proximity to the fairer sex. The Presidential Court rules. As others have noted, Reese and Carrick have better bathroom logistics than Hess.

    I was there from fall of '79 to spring of '81. The place was a dump but I was an education major and my classes were all about 2 minutes away. I had a single room there for 3 semesters and it was great.

  • Carrick or bust in my opinion. Lived there my freshman year and being so close to a hoard of females, along with being across the courtyard from a Subway makes it even better. Currently living in Quarry Trail and I highly suggest getting tfo of dorms as quickly as possible (none of them are too great as far as living conditions go).

  • Congrats!!! So here is the deal, the best two dorms (unless they have opened some new ones they were building) are Gibbs and Morrill. Morrill has women living in it and a cafeteria which is smaller and the food is better. Its also essentially in Presidential court so you are living with a bunch of freshman. Gibbs if you can do it is the best place to live. The beds are bigger to serve the athletes needs, and they have a specialized cafeteria. Unless things changed, you can eat in the Gibbs dining hall for no extra charge if you live there or you can pay extra to eat there if you don't (trust me, its worth paying to eat lunch there once in a while).

    When I was in school, Morrill was upperclassmen only. Has that changed?

    I lived in North Carrick when I was a freshman at UT, and I would say North Carrick and Reese are your best bets — and, in my opinion, the best-located and most entertaining places to live as a freshman. Presidential Court is a good area, with a dining hall conveniently located just across the courtyard. You'll also encounter plenty of hilarious and interesting things in the courtyard as you walk to and from class.

  • I lived there as a freshman in 05.....half the bldg was freshman....but its always changing.
