Greatest American sports moment?

  • Kirk Gibson home run. I was a Dodgers fan in high school. Watching that highlight still gives me goosebumps.

I don't think Woods ever beats his record of 18 majors. Even if he did manage to find the magic and start winning them again, it wouldn't match up in my mind.

Look at the competition Nicklaus faced throughout his career -- Palmer, Watson, Trevino, Player, Ballesteros.

Woods' list is mediocre by comparison -- Els, Mickelson, Goosen?

I agree. Lots of good players today but not many great ones. The technology of clubs today have made the players better than they really are in my opinion. Heck, the technology has made me better!

  • I think a great sports moment that change the game of basketball is when Jordan won the slam dunk competition with the airwalk from the free throw line. IMO basketball has never been the same.

The Miracle on ice was one of the greatest.

How about Thrilla in Manilla. Ali was a bad man.

Jesse Owens at the Olympics and The Miracle on Ice are probably the first two that spring to my mind.

as much as it pains me to say this....I agree with a cubs fan on this one...blaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

had to edit--thrilla with Ali is up there in my mind for some strange reason--golden age of boxing.

  • My wife just brought another great event to mind. How about Secretariat's Triple Crown especially the 31 length victory at the Belmont.

  • Joe D 56 game hitting streak. I guess that would be several moments, but still a huge achievement.

  • Homerun #715 by Hank Aaron. Still remember sitting with my dad and watching that.

  • Bill Mazeroski's 9th inning walk off homer in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series deserves a mention. But I'd have to vote for The Miracle on Ice.

  • Probably not one of the greatest but certainly one of my favorites. 1999 US Open. Payne Stewart defeated Phil Mickelson. Phil and his wife were expecting their first child. When Payne shook Phil's hand on 18th green, he embraced him and said "There's nothing like being a father." I'll never forget that.

thumbsupAs is this thread wataugavol. It's brought back lots of memories and makes you realize how hard it is to narrow a list down to one great event.

  • I'd say you can take your pick of the Cardinals' 11 World Series titles, or any of the 103 consecutive years that have passed without the Cubs winning a World Series. biggrin

In all seriousness, it probably has to be the Miracle on Ice.

  • Greatest US Sporting Event... I think the Miracle on Ice has to be the most significant sports victory in or countries history. I think they did a great job in the movie Miracle... and the one thing that always sticks out in my mind about that movie is at the end when they have on the screen... Herb Brooks never saw the final movie, he lived it.... that is awesome.

Lou Gehrigs farewell speech high on list!

  • Miracle on Ice, but Miracle at South Bend was pretty damn good. :)

  • Being born in the 90s, most of these things mentioned happened before my time. Some of my most memorable moments include:
    -Michael Phelps winning 7 golds.
-The Boise State Fiesta Bowl win is still one of my favorite games ever.
-Although we know the truth about his roid use now, I will never forget the night McGwire hit #62. It was magical and truly revived baseball.
-Also, the 04 Red Sox run was one for the ages.
-Lastly, and I don't know why, but the Texas/USC national championship game with VY is a game I'll never forget watching.

  • The first one I thought of was Miracle on Ice, then the 99 Women's World Cup final win with a PK shootout. Other than that, I'll say Phelps.

  • McGuire vs. Sosa was fun to watch!
And yet again- a Cardinal won!
    Suck it Wes!

Agreed. And it came at a time when baseball really needed it, much like McGwire's No. 62 - another great one.

The USC-Texas national championship game may be the best college football game I have seen. Great choice.

  • The Miracle on Ice was by far the best for me. However, at the risk of losing my man card, there was a women's gymnastics moment in the Olympics where one of the girls injured her ankle and still had to compete for team points. She stuck the landing, but had to be carried off the mat by the US coach . . . a great scene. And the underdog USA team won the gold!

The difference in Woods' competition and Nickalaus competition isn't even close. Yes you mention 5 of the best players of all time, but they were the only 5 that could win consistently when Nickalaus was playing. In The past 15 years with Tiger Woods the difference is any player on tour can come out and win at any time. I disagree completely if you think Nickalaus played in a greater age of golf.

However, as for the topic at hand, I was not alive in 1980 so I can only say I hear the Miracle on Ice is the greatest sports moment in US History. In my lifetime I would have to say some of the best are Donovan's Goal, Phelps dominating the olympics and the Mets vs Braves game in NY the week after 9-11. However the night that stands out the most is Michael Johnson dominating the in Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Those 2 pairs of shoes, Purple and gold, shoes are forever cemented in my mind, especially after the bombing at the games.
