Greg Roman

  • If Hart doesn't at least interview and give Roman a serious look If we get into our second tier then he is crazy. Granted you always worry about how involved he is versus harbaugh himself. However you see the success of David Shaw and Willie Taggert and you have to believe Roman can be successful too. When a guy with that resume comes calling you at least answer to talk

  • Wouldn't mind that hire at all. Would prefer Gruden, but they definitely need to kick the tires on Roman.

  • I am all in on Roman. Stanford plays good football, so do the 49ers, which means I would not worry about losing on the x's and o's.

  • I think Roman and Smart have similar resumes, but Smart has deeper ties to the south in recruiting

I see your point, but would take Charlie Strong over Smart any day of the week. He's done what Smart's done at two different schools, and there has never been a question of who was really running the defense at those schools.

Definitely like what's Romans done. If not gruden I hope he gets a look. He's no more of a risk than strong and the other 2nd tiers.

  • I'm not high on Strong. He hasn't impressed me as a HC.

    6-6 1st year
    7-6 2nd year
    9-2 3rd year

Looks ok on the surface but consider the facts that they almost lost to Southern Miss (0-11), FIU (3-9), and USF (3-8); they did lose to Syracuse and Uconn; and they have a worse conference record that Rutgers who has a first year head coach.

I'm just not impressed by what Strong has done as Louisville.

not sure I agree... you have to wonder how much Smart is really involved in the defense at Bama... something tells me that Saban has a pretty big hand in this. Much more that Harbaugh with Roman. jmo

I agree. If we dont get Gruden, Stoops or Fisher I dont want Smart, Strong or Golden. I'm also not wanting Mora or Fedora because they have only been at their schools 1 year and it would be like USC taking Kiff.

I feel the same way. I really like Roman and the fact that he REALLY wants the job. They need to at least interview the guy.

Marked improvement every year, took over a horrible situation after kraggthorpe and you aren't impressed? Does he need to walk on water? He would kill it in Knoxville...oh and almost losses count as wins.

Pretty sure his lineup is loaded with freshmen and sophomores too.

This is a cool FYI on Roman. I heard Rumors that he had a place here in Tennessee & after looking I can confirm this.

I did a little research and he does own a home on the lake about 15 miles south of Kingston. This information is listed on TN Comptroller website. Information has owners (He & wife, Dana) address as Palo Alto, CA, which is where he currently resides & this also ties into address info on white pages and his bio as confirmation. The biggest kicker of all of this is that it is less than a mile or so from my home! I think he would be in my top 5 list not to mention that it would be awesome to say I live by the coach of THE University of Tennessee!!

PS: If you can't tell, nothing exciting ever happens where I live lol! It is a very rural area.

  • This has been my pick from day 1. Don't get me wrong Gruden would be a grand slam hire but I don't see that happening.

His offense is just amazing. They line it up and punch you in the mouth and throw off of play action. You think we have academic concerns? Try recruiting to Stanford.

Bring in Jim Leavitt as DC and we have a great start to a coaching staff.

He does not need to walk on water, but losing to U-Conn and Syracuse doesn't help. I actually think the coach at Syracuse is better. "Cuse beat Mizzou and Louisville this year (along with S. Florida and Pitt). Also, the SU coach is a former Vol assistant.

+1 to you. I remember when you first threw out his name I didn't really see it. But now he is pretty much my top choice.

Keep Jay and Pittman, bring in Tee, and I think we would be right back on track sooner than expected.

  • My first choice is Patterson but I would love to get Roman. I think he is the next big deal. Be crazy not to talk to him.

  • I have Roman behind Gruden and Stoops but ahead of Strong and Fisher. I would love to get Gruden at UT and Roman at the Panthers. Or vice versa but would prefer Gruden at UT

  • Why in the world are some of you so in love with Roman? He's NEVER been a head coach, and there are PLENTY of good offenses around... so why Greg Roman and not any other OC of a good offense?

Honestly, I don't think he has the right skillset for head coaching. Just doesn't come off as a CEO and lacks the charisma to recruit well. And even if he appeared to this is an INCREDIBLY important hire for Tennessee. If our next coach underperforms it could do enough damage to our image that rather than the #1 opening we may be behind several programs next time we do a coaching search.

At least with Bob Stoops, Jimbo Fisher, Al Golden and other experienced head coaches we know that we're getting a good to great coach. There is virtually no potential for abject failure there. Greg Roman, since he's never been a head coach, could be anything from terrible to fantastic. And we won't have any idea until after we're committed to him. Let him get his head coaching feet wet in the Sun Belt or Conference USA... big time SEC schools shouldn't be doing promotion-hiring anyways. The level of risk we'd be subjecting ourselves to with this guy is just unnecessary, and quite honestly stupid.

And don't forget that he'd be the HEAD COACH, not the OC... so if you want him for his offense, you're going to be disappointed when he hires an OC who installs their offense(this is how football works). And I honestly don't get the love affair with the 49ers offense from college fans anyways. It's not ground breaking, it's just a pro-style offense. And it's way too complex to install with college practice time limits. We could easily end up with Clawfense Part 2 if he did try to install his own offense. Heck, even in the NFL his offense is just ranked 11th... passing offense is 27th. Last season the total offense ranked 26th and passing 29th. Besides, this isn't the NFL... it's college. Our "cutting edge" offense would be completely ordinary in a world of spread options and pistol formations.

  • Gruden is of course my number one. But Roman is a very close number two. I think he is the next big thing as well. Those are the only 2 I would be happy with
