Gruden - Recruiting

  • Dream with me for a minute.

It seems like the biggest argument against Gruden is that he isn't a proven recruiter. Does anyone REALLY think he'd struggle to recruit with this staff?

    OC/QB: Jay Gruden
    WR: Tee Martin
    RB: Jay Graham
    TE/ST: Rich Bisaccia
    OL: Sam Pittman

    DC: Ron Zook
    DL: Dan Brooks
    LB: Peter Sirmon
    DB: Derrick Ansley

I know Sirmon and Wilcox are tight.. but I'm sure he aspires to be a DC and coaching for Gruden and Zook or Morris would look great on his resume.

How sick would UT's recruiting be with this staff? If Tennessee gives Gruden what he wants ($4M-$5M for assistants), he could put a staff like this together and it wouldn't matter how good or bad of a recruiter he is.. although I think Gruden would be a great recruiter but that's JMO. Ok I'll put down my pipe now.

  • I don't think Gruden would have any problems getting a staff together to assist him with recruiting, and lets face it Saban isn't going to every recruit's house only the five star guys. Because he knows those players follow each other.

Gruden's staff does the leg work and Gruden focuses on a few big players and makes a closing visit on a few others. Gruden's reputation with MNF has made him a household name. Recruiting will not be a problem. twocents

  • As volsfaninohio stated, I really don't think Gruden will have any trouble recruiting. The potential problem with the Gruden hire centers on the question of whether his style will translate to the college game. There are numerous examples of a coach bring a scheme that is just too complicated for college players, e.g. 2011 Oline verse 2012 Oline. That said, I agree with your asst. coach choices for RB, TE/ST, OL, and DL. IMO Tee Martin and Peter Sirmon are not coming back to Rocky Top. FWIW Tee would not be my top choice for WR Coach, nor do I think he would be Gruden's top choice. As for the DB coach, I am in agreement with Checkerboardvol's opinion that Conklin should be retained. The guy can coach and recruit. What's more, the former DC is far more experienced than Ansley. JMO.

  • If we do hire Gruden, Juan Castillo will be O-line coach, that's a 100% fact.

Well, I hope he wouldn't be DC. You and I know how that BS turned out.

Haha I know, that wasn't Juan's fault though. You and I both know he's an awesome O-line coach though. He'd be great for the college game to, players love him.

  • Would love to add Trent Dilfer as QB coach to the Gruden staff. He already is known by kids as well for his work with the Elite 11 as well as his other ESPN jobs. If Jay doesn't leaves Pros he would be at the top of my list but not as off coord. Just as a position coach for now moving up later

So, IYO, the rumors about Gruden contacting Castillo to see if he'd be interested in coaching with him are true. I had not read this rumor until your comment prompted me to do a little research. Would be awesome IMO.

ESPN wouldn't hate us anymore, that's for sure. Might was well hire Mark May to coach OL also.

Up here in Philly Brian Baldinger does a radio show from 12-2 and he said that wherever Gruden is coaching next year Juan Castillo will be by his side... Juan Castillo is one of my favorite Eagles coaches of all time. When he got fired this year before the bye, which was not deserving. On live Tv he cried and apologized to the fan base for not getting the job done... The guy would be a great coach and a great recruiter.

What makes you think Tee Martin wouldn't come back to Tennessee? Who would be your top choice?
