Gruden---next football coach??

  • Everyone posting in this thread does realize that the team currently destroying the rest of college football in Tuscaloosa is only doing so because their fans and major boosters had exactly the opposite mindset that you have, right? Why did Alabama get Saban? Because they did what was necessary.

Now I'm not going to sit here and tell you we're getting Gruden. I doubt very seriously we will. But the man has said he is open to coaching the college, he has shown a previous affinity for the University, and if he becomes a realistic option at any point I highly doubt finding the money to pay him his $5M is going to be that difficult.

So go ahead and continue decrying the ability of this University to hire a top of the line coach. But you get what you pay for, and in the long run it does this program a disservice to pretend like we aren't here to play with the big boys.

I hope Dooley turns the ship around and becomes the coach everyone wants him to be. I like the man personally. But if he doesn't it's our responsibility as alums, ticket-holders, and vested members of the UT community to hold Dave Hart accountable and make it clear to him that we expect him to spend what is necessary to bring in a coach that will allow us to compete at the level Tennessee should compete at.

How many colleges do you know of that pay their head coach $5M+? I'll hang up and listen.

  • The answer... is 1. Texas pays Mack Brown $5.2M. Texas, Alabama, and Oklahoma are the only schools in the country that pay their head football coach $4M+, FYI

This post is so wrong it's laughable. If alabama fans and boosters had their way they would have gotten Rich Rod. It's amazing how many people fall for this version of revisionist history. Guess people will convince themselves of anything if it helps them believe that winning isn't hard.

  • I'm not sold that Gruden is a great coach and worth more than $5 million. There's a lot of hype around this that I just don't understand.

I don't think he had the most stellar of records while in the NFL. His teams were always up and down. I know I lived in Tampa when he was there and there were plenty of people fed up with the fact he always liked the 40 year old veteran quarterbacks. I'm not sure where he's going to find a 40 year old senior in college. But he has no college experience. Saban was hired because they knew he built a program at LSU. What in the heck do you know you're getting with Gruden?

He goes out and hires a bunch of pro guys. He goes to kid's places, talks about how he was in the NFL and he can guarantee the knowledge he'll bestow could lead to the NFL for the kid. He sells the kid on the image. Hey, I'm Gruden. Kid comes to UT, but could care less about the school. Cares more about his dreams...

Hmmm... Where have I heard this before? Let me think...

It is also our responsibility to not feed the monkey and watch it grow. I am floored that this discussion has once again been brought up.

  • I think Gruden is a good coach. But 5.5M initially in ridiculous. Maybe if he was already here and winning 10-14 games each season and wanted a new contract, but I'm not willing to make him the highest paid coach in the nation based on purely NFL experience.
