First off, Gruden is a control freak and would be limited by the NCAA. After years and years in the NFL 20 hrs/week with the team wouldn't be nearly enough for him. He demands film room presence but he can't be with the players, it would eat him uphaving to rely on a 18-22 yr old kid to do the film study demanded by Gruden. He wouldn't be able to be as hands on, and would basically be workin with a hand tied behind his back working in college.
Secondly, if he says he wants to get back into coaching, numerous NFL teams will gladly fire theircurrent coach to offer 5x the money UT could offer up. Simple fact. Carolina, AZ, Jax, Minn, all come to mind quickly.
Third, his name comes up everytime and he's simply not a serious candidate. He's an NFL guy and has no ties to the South in terms of recruiting. His name is big but hasn't done anything positive in coaching in 10 yrs when he won a Super Bowl which kids now a days prob can't name the super bowl winning coach from 3 yrs ago. Sure he has countless ties to the NFL but other than that he hasn't ever recruited.The NFL will throw way more money at him than UT could ever hope to offer. It's not gunna happen.

Life With Gruden for Better or Worse
CINDY GRUDEN is sure her husband, Jon, the head coach of the Raiders, actually proposed at some point. By the time Jon sent for Cindy to come to San Francisco, he'd been at Southeast Missouri State and Pacific, and was muddling along as a glorified video librarian at the Bill Walsh think tank. Cindy was a graduate student at Tennessee, past her days as a college cheerleader, when she met Jon, who was scratching along on the fringes of the Tennessee football program. The coaches would send him down to The Strip (Knoxville's main drag) to get something to eat for everybody, and of course parking was just terrible, so he'd just get a place and get a ticket. Gruden had a nice gig in Stockton, in charge of the wide receivers at UOP in 1989, but he gave it all up -- a paid car, insurance, and medical coverage -- to come to the 49ers. The late Bobb McKittrick once said his son had done it for a while and gotten bored and quit, but it gave Gruden access to the meetings and minds he needed. The next year one of the 49ers' contacts paid off when Paul Hackett, the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh, offered Gruden the position as wide receivers coach. When it was announced that Mike Holmgren, another 49er contact, was the new head coach for the Green Bay Packers, the apartment went silent every time the phone rang. became offensive coordinator at Philadelphia, and then was hired as the youngest head coach in the NFL by Al Davis. Cindy has organized a large group of the wives of players and coaches to come to the training facility to watch away games together. She's learned to ignore the terrible words her husband can be seen mouthing on the sidelines, and a schedule that has him leaving the house at 5 a.m. and not coming home until 9 or 10 that night early in the week.
