He's decent. I don't think he's the impressive hire UT needs if they end up shopping for a coach tho. If you drop 9 million to get rid of your current staff.... You better have an absolute home run hire in place. If not, stick with what you got.

Who are your home run hires?

I hear a lot of talk about Charlie Strong and none about Butch Jones who just barely lost to Strong's UL team this weekend. Jones has proven he can turn a program around and win big games. Just wondering what the board thought about this coach.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Butch Jones inheritted a pretty well-established Cincinatti program. One that was established by Brian Kelly.

Gruden is the only one I'm safe to say would be at this point. There's a lot of guys I like, but they are in the NFL and probably wouldn't come here. There's really no one in the college ranks that I think could turn UT around immediately except Saban or Meyer. That's only because they both recruit really well. That guy that's coaching Stanford is really doing a nice job. He's somebody I'd keep on my radar.

I like Strong's toughness and demeanor just as much as the next guy but I wonder if he is what this program needs right now. Strong has a lot of potential but is he proven? Despite his success, Strong has had to play only two ranked teams during his tenure at Louisville, ORSt and WV, of which he is 1-1. Tennessee's schedule doesn't afford him that luxury. Strong is a good coach but he has not proven he can be successful with a schedule loaded with top 20 teams. Furthermore, the Louisville AD is willing to make him the highest paid coach in college football if that's what it takes to keep him at Louisville. So the natural question becomes, "Is Strong worth that much to TN?" and if so, "Should he be?"

So in other words Strong has managed to do in just 2 games what Dooley hasn't been able to do in 20 attempts...Beat a ranked team.

If Strong is an option we better jump on him if we don't get Gruden. I think Arkansas will get Tuberville.

Please enlighten me as to why Charlie Strong is such a home run hire because I don't see it

  • I just want a defensive guy and a great recruiter. RIght now you can't win in this league without those elite front seven guys and I don't see how we get those without someone to get their attention.
