Hot New Basketball Cliche

I'm seeing it everywhere, Martin uses it, but I just don't get it:
"score the ball."
How could you score without the ball? I'm a word guy and the use of unnecessary words rubs me the wrong way. Why say "score the ball," when "score" works just as well?

This was being used over 20 years ago when I was in school. Think triple threat position. You can pass the ball, dribble the ball, score (shoot) the ball.

And I'd edit it to "You can pass, dribble and score." You can't do any of those without the ball!

Not surprisingly, I'm with you on that one. That phrase kind of drives me crazy.

"He's got a good 'twitch'."
