Hot and not: Teams on a roll, in a rut in recruiting

  • Here's a good story from 247Sports recruiting analyst Barton Simmons taking a look at five teams that are on a roll right now in recruiting and five that currently are in a rut.

Five programs on a recruiting roll and five in a recruiting rut

We take a look at five programs that are heating up at the right time in recruiting as well as five more who are working to get out of a recruiting rut.

  • As I read the "hots," I knew in my heart we were among the "nots." Jones needs to turn this train around or the progress we've made in improving the roster will reverse, making the rebuild a longer, harder pull.

    C'mon Butch. Finish strong!

  • Dooley did not help us but neither did Hart by putting us through an uneven hiring process starting with Gruden and ending with someone who would say yes to us.

  • I am a bit impressed with Jones getting 2 EE at CB and S and a 2014 commit in just over a week.

We only had about 14-15 commits last year at this same time too. You can spin it a few different ways and things have to be realistic in regards to expectations too.

I can see a school like USCe, Clemson and TX with no coaching change being on this list more than UT. Simmons seemed to base this more on the end of Dooleys tenure going south the last month+ of the season and recruits hitting the pause button on us vs UT getting a quick spark from the Jones hire and quickly addressing our DB needs in a week and lining up OVs in Jan.

JMO Simmons should add a team like Mizzou not being able to sell the SEC @ 36th with one 4* player and no coaching change or especially Miami at 48th with no coaching change which is a top 5 destination school to recruit to still. Those teams have no excuse.

IF you have UT on this list maybe you need to put Ark too?

  • As bad as it sounds, i always want momentum late, rather than early. Once the dead period gets finished, that is when i want to see us rolling. One week can change everything

Just my two cents, but I think UT is in more trouble from a recruiting standpoint than any of the other teams you mention.
    - USCe, Clemson, and TX all have coaching staffs that have been on recruits for awhile and closed well in the past, they have some heavy leans that would shoot them up the rankings real quick.
    - Mizzou is still ranked higher than us, and I believe UM is so low because they can only take a few prospects.
    - UT is in a real tough situation right now IMO because Butch Jones is a pretty unsexy hire because he doesn't have a strong brand (not saying he won't be successful or can't coach). UT could strike out on North, Green, Lawson, etc and then be in scramble mode real quick, loose Skipper and Carr and the class starts to look real ugly.
