How Do You Measure Improvement

  • for Dooley in year 3? Personally, I start with his first year. He went 6-7, made it to a bowl, and beat everyone he was supposed to beat. In year two I expected them to maintain status quo, given the lack of experience. Meaning beat the teams you were supposed to beat, which would have resulted in a bowl game and an opportunity to improve over the previous year. It didn't happen because of the Kentucky loss. In fact it was a step back. For the progr to improve, I expect Dooley to win out and win his bowl game. To me that means he won the games he was supposed to win and defeated a quality opponent in a bowl. Its not the amount of improvement I prefer, but it is improvement. I would have preferred he won a game he wasn't supposed to win.

To be clear the team took a step back last year. To improve, IMO, they need to take to take 2 steps forward this year. Doing so IMO is clearly improvement. What do the rest of you think?

  • Bowl Game opponent won't be good. It could be Pitt or UCF... We'd be in a crappy bowl playing a crappy team. None of these wins mean anything, assuming he evn gets them.

  • So you're saying its not improvement? I am not telling you it proves he's the right guy or that I am happy with that outcome, but I believe it is improvement.

Yea it's improvement from terrible to bad. Not enough imporvement for me especially with our roster. Miss St loss was pathetic. They won't be ranked to finish the year.

  • In what year do you foresee Dooley improving to 10 or 11 wins because we are not closing the gap at all in terms of recruiting, game management or fundamentals with the teams we'd have to catch to get to that level.

  • Good question OP.

In year 3 I wanted to see a team that was competitive with everyone in the East. From a recruiting standpoint, I can see looking at rankings and saying teams are pulling away from us, but when I look on the field I don't see that at all. Outside of RB, it is possible that everyone on O would be on a 1st or 2nd All-Sec East Team.

So I do think there has been tremendous improvement in terms of the quality of this team compared to the team he was left by CLK regardless of the record. What has made this year so disapointing is that if the defense was not a complete cluster$$$$, this team is 8-1 or 7-2 and we are talking about a BCS Bowl.

Thats the plan. We go from terrible, to bad, to awful, to lame, to not-so-good, to mediorce, to average, to o.k., to decent. to pretty good, to good, to pretty darn good, to really good, to great, to outstanding, to awesome. Yes sir, we are just 14 years away! Patience everyone!

  • Everyone expected 8 wins this season. We will have that. I do feel this recruiting cycle is lacking, but hey we didn't get the win over the top 25 ( albeit we got back in top 25 since 08 this year) like we thought even though we got close and Dooley might as well have his hands tied behind his back from all then fan, media, Internet apathy.

Next year he needs to finish in top 25. Get a win over upper echelon or he has reached his ceiling and he should resign.

Be a VFL and stand behind this team and its coaches.

Good question. I am not sure Dooley can ever.get us there, but if he goes 8-5 with a bowl win, he'll get a chance to see if he can improve on the current recruiting class and get some momentum for next season.

  • If we get to 8-5 then I think that's pretty fair for realistic season expectations. I've personally seen a lot of growth since Dooley has arrived. We've gone from getting sh!t on by everyone in the top 25 to competing for a half then getting sh!t on to competing for a full game with a chance to win on a final drive. UGa, MissSt and USC games we found ourselves down a score in the 4th with the ball in our hands and all 3 times we fumbled an opportunity away and IMO that's on player execution not coaching. Now don't get me wrong coaching is a concern and obviously I am not happy with the way this season has gone but have I seen improvement in the program under Dooleys watch....most definitely.

Beating UF after 50 minutes and 4th quarter losses to uga, scar, and MSU; I don't think we were as far away this year from that happening as you make it seem.
