How I Perceive Hart's Options

  • In no particular order

    (1) Whore yourself out and take a chance on a good coach with baggage (Petrino, Davis)

    (2) Crawl back to Fulmer and beg him to make the Southern Football Gods call off their jihad

    (3) Hire another guy everyone has to wikipedia

    (4) Go back to Gruden with an offer to make him the highest paid coach in any league, ever

    (5) Pull a rabbit out of the hat and get a proven guy no one's been considering (Tuberville, Stoops, etc.)

#5 is probably the only real good one....

  • IMO, step one still needs to be throw some money at Fedora and make him say no. I doubt he'd take it, but until he and/or UNC comes out w/a flat denial, he's by far the best of the remaining options, and I preferred him to both Strong and Gundy to begin with.

But word has it that he won't even talk to us because of the signal it sends after being at UNC only 1 year.

If we can't get the guy to even interview, it's kind of a non-starter.

  • I agree with dober on Fedora but I'd do it completely behind the scenes. As to Tubberville, I was exposed to him daily during his time at AU and I think he'd wear thin on the fan base within 3 years and he'd be run off.

I sincerely believe Fulmer is our best option at this juncture.

I do not believe the lack of a new head coach is Hart's doing or failure. Who would take a career ending job that didn't love Tennessee to begin with? Obviously none of our targets love Tennessee and nobody is standing in line for an interview.

  • Davis -- now. UT is being embarrassed.

  • My perception of options:

    1) overpay for an elite coach. and I mean WAY overpay. 6 mil plus to pull a big boy to come here.
    2) hire one of the coaches with baggage, perceived or otherwise, that you dont have to overpay and will get at a bargain - Petrino, Tressel, Davis.
    3) second tier coach, or a coordinator.

To me, it has to be 1 or 2. We do not have the luxury to "hope" to get lucky on a second tier coach (e.g. Butch Jones), or a coordinator (e.g. Smart, Roman). We must hire a proven winner at an elite level who is likewise a big attention getting hire that excites the base and recruits. my two pennies.

  • Y'all may disagree, but if I've got the phone, the first three men I'm calling are

    1) Larry Fedora (make HIM say no)

    2) Tommy Tuberville (He won at Auburn, why not give him a shot at UT?)

    3) Bobby Petrino (say what you will about his morals, the man wins games. And that's what Tennessee needs right now: wins)

Beyond those three, I'd consider: (in this order) Greg Roman, Al Golden, Butch Jones, Jim Tressel

Agree. We probably won't do it though.

If we go hire Butch Jones or someone like that I will puke.

It don't have to be official. Just a phone call. Look we got 4+ million for 3+ years and almost unlimited budget for coaches. Will you listen? yes or no simple. I bet my SS check he would listen.

Exactly. I need a hire that doesn't make me feel like a fool for being obsessed.
