How badly do we really need an elite running back?

  • Neal, Lane, and Young have all been pretty effective this year behind this good offensive line. I've watched all of our games and as the season has gone by I have gotten more and more confident in Neal and Lane. Idk if a stud running back would really be able to come in and be the starter over those guys.

Nothing you say is wrong but consider a Derrick Green behind this line and tell me we don't need or could use an elite back. I think someone of his caliber could have a 1500yd year. JMO

  • I'm happy with the guys we have but Green would be a nice addition

  • Pretty damn badly. Now that we have an elite offensive line, and we might be losing Bray, it is a top priority. I think Neal can be an elite back, but in case he isn't, plus we need to look to the future. I consider it a top recruiting priority.

  • Why do you think we pass on every 3rd and 1? We don't have the guy to get tough yards. We need more YAC, Green is very explosive, but he falls forward everytime, that's something we need/

  • Good points. I think next year out offense will be more run heavy, and an elite back will be a huge boost for the passing game. Our backs have played well this year, but nobody is playing the run.

  • I'm more concerned with the lack of any pass rushers. We really need to start getting some big time front seven players to contend in this league.

Just assuming we get Derrick Green. He seems to be our best chance at an immediate PT guy.

  • Oh, sorry, Driz. No buzz required.

If you cannot get 1 yard on a run I would blame that mainly on the offensive line. But we usually put in A.J. Johnson so its not even a problem. I'm sure all of these guys fell forward in high school. For future reasons it is very important to get Derrick Green but i'm just talking about next year. I think Young's carries would go way down but Lane and Neal would probably get most of the carries over Green. It's hard for running backs to have instant success when they change levels.

  • I think bray comes back next year and one of cp and hunter come back but I don't know which one yet!

    UTBdub

  • We need elite players everywhere. We need game changers. Areas that you can easily see a need are:

    RB
    CB
    S
    OLB- jack
    Pass rushers anywhere
WRs esp if 2 go pro early.

    SamVolsam

  • This line, Bray,CP, JH, Green and a coach like Gruden would be dangerous and they would return to play for him. That coupled with some defense of course.

  • Agree Sam. I like what Coach Dooley is building at the safety position with Randolph and McNeil and with a commitment from Miles. To me, CB is by far the most glaring need. Would love to see Dooley & Co. close out the 2013 class with RB Greene, WR North, DT Adams a stud CB and of course the Big Hawaiian.

I kinda disagree with this. The easiest position to transition from HS to College is RB. Look at Yeldon, Gurley, Jones from UF, I'd take all 3 of those guys over any of ours. If you hit on an elite RB in HS, they can start here.

We need players like Vonn Bell that is leaning toward Bama, Lawson committed to AU, juco DE T. Johnson, juco WR Rumph or C. Smith, WR North, an elite juco CB and HS CB, RB Green, OG Koehler, any elite beast DT/ pass rusher, LB Ngakoue etc.

those are very fair examples. I don't disagree with any of what you said. Elite running backs can have success immediantly IF they live up to their hype. IF is always a big question. What is your opinion on Neal and Lane though?

Wow, I need my Vol Card revoked for not mentioning Bell! What is the latest on the corner from Florida that originally committed to the Vols but reopened his recruitment? Do you know what JUCO corners the Vols are looking at? A little help Ryan?

We are not getting M. Alexander.....Garland is one juco corner but he has to visit and have not heard he will.

We have about 3 CBs for 2013 on the roster that will see the field and 2 have barely played as true FR (but will more and more I think).......we need a ready to play CB bad.

It is an easier position to contribute early at so I agree with you. There are just too many examples of great backs contributing as freshman and the Vols have some examples of their own such as Jamal Lewis. We really need DG. He may lack a little of the power of Derrick Henry but has more quicks. +1

They compliment each other well. They both I think run to high though, and both miss a lot of holes. Lane misses holes outside, and Neal misses them inside. But Neal has been better. I think they are both average and neither will play in the NFL, that's why I think there is opportunity for somebody to come in and start.

    hdrizzle21

  • Elite RBs take it to the house......they make 0 yard gains be 3........they make 5 yard gains 10. They also make a D focus on stopping the run and instead of 6-7 they have to bring 8 to stop it like we do vs UGA and USCe and Bama.......which makes throwing it deep so much easier as UGA and Bama did to us the last few years. We dont have that on our team even though Neal and co have improved this year with not dancing + our Oline is really good.
