How did you become a Vol?

  • I believe it was after I saw Diane Lane and the other kids sing "Rocky Top" in the movie Six Pack. Right about that time.

    Keith Niebuhr

  • By the grace of God I was born at UT Medical Center. So I am literally a Vol from birth.

  • Birth, but when James Wilhoit missed the XP against FLA and then came back and hit a 51 yarder to win the game. He went to my highschool and was a older. That was awesome.

  • Missed the college thread, I went to Olivet Nazarene College in Kanakee IL. Small place nobody's ever heard of that has since become a university and the fall camp location of my beloved Chicago Bears.

Been a Vol fan since 71, the year we moved to TN. When I was a kid, whatever Pop was doing on Saturday is what I was doing. Cutting/splitting/stacking wood, carpentry, working on the race car, whatever it was I got to listen to John Ward call the game. Been bleeding Orange ever since!

  • Glad to say I was born into the VFL! Dad, mom, both grandparents, aunts, uncles, you name it all Vol. Remember growing up in the 90's and going to Neyland to 103k plus. Absolutely awe struck as a kid, never had some many chill bumps. Instantly became a Vol fan, no place like Knoxville on an autumn saturday.

  • Like many others, I was raised listening to the great John Ward and Bill Anderson with my dad. There was never any doubt in my mind where I would go to college.

It has always been, and it will always be, great to be a Tennessee Volunteer.

  • My mom met a man from Knoxville in 1986 in Atlanta. They started dateing and he took us up to Knoxville to meet his family and while we were there he took us to a vols game and it was my first college football game and I loved it. Needless to say they got married in '87 and we have been going to games ever since. he turned me, my brother, and one of my cousins on to the vols and now I'm working on my wife's nephew ( who lives with his gramps who is a huge G.tech fan) he now screams "go vols uncle Eric" all the time so I'm doing my part to produce more VFLs.

  • Born in Fort Worth, Texas but raised a Volunteer in Knoxville. Orange runs through my veins.

  • Born and raised in Sweetwater. Went to UT. Have been a Vol fan since birth. Earliest memories was listening to John Ward call the games on the radio and when they were on TV, my brother and I would mute the broadcasters and still listen to The Voice of the Vols.

Brought my orange with me to the Bluegrass State 5 years ago.

  • My local HS in SC is named Andrew Jackson HS, the Volunteers. In the mid 80's my dad would take me to all the games including girls basketball and they were really good. We even went to Columbia to watch them play for the state championship. Then came signing time for the stars. The star center surprised everyone by singing with UT. Her quote in the paper was,"Once a Volunteer always a Volunteer!". That sounded right to me. Her name is Karla Horton Douglas now.

  • I met my wife at the University of Delaware. She is from Knoxville. Before we got married (and while I was still in school), I came down for a football game in 2004. The difference between Delaware, which has a 30,000 seat stadium, and Neyland Stadium was incredible. I keep trying to tell my friends who still live up north that they need to come experience this. They really think that college football is college football, and that there isn't a great deal of difference between going to a game at a I-AA school vs. an SEC school. Man, are they wrong!

So I guess it's a good thing my wife wasn't a fan of another big time program, because I likely would've been wowed by their atmosphere just the same. I'm glad I'm a Vol fan, even though they haven't had a great deal of success since I become one.

  • Similar to patspitz, I am an Air Force brat who was born in Tokyo and lived in AR, AK, TX, IN & TN while growing. My tie starts with Mom bring born & raised in Dayton, TN where we always visited while on leave. Dad was a huge sports fan so with Mom being a UT fan she drew him in and that was all it took. Visiting ET and following UT while in all other places brought me to the point at HS graduation with the decision, go to Ball State Univ or UT(was heading into Architecture). I chose UT for the obvious reason plus better weather than Northern IN. Got into UT but couldn't get on-campus housing so I went to MTSU for a one year stop-gap, got accepted in UT School of Arch for Soph year, room in Andy Holt, had it all set and then realized I was tired of moving and the 'Boro wasn't a bad spot, also was wavering on Arch. Changed major and stayed at MTSU but blood still ran orange, lived in Nashville for a few years after graduation then moved to Knoxville 25 years ago. My first UT game was the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston in 1979, first game in Neyland was UT vs. Auburn in 1985.

  • Born in Knoxville, but moved to Florida at 16 months old. My family were the lone Vol fans as everyone else it seemed like pulled for Miami, Florida or FSU. Had to follow the Vols in the newspaper except for 2-3 games per year (Florida, SEC championship game and maybe one other if I was lucky). Moved back to Tennessee as a Junior in High School one week before the blizzard of 93'.

I was at that Bluebonnet Bowl game myself, the only time I was ever in the Astrodome.

It was Majors' first bowl, in his third year at UT. We lost to Purdue. It was two years before we made another one, the Garden State. We won that one over Wisconsin.

Rebuilding was, and is, very tough.

  • A Tennessee Vol before I was born.... if that's possible.

    Born in East Tennessee

Went to UT in 1978-82, season ticket holder to this day,

In my office (in Dayton, OH) hangs an Orange & White Sterling Marlin replica NASCAR Hood commemorating 1998 National Championship, on my walls there are framed pictures of Ayres Hall, General Neyland, and Neyland Stadium, along with a replica license plate sent to me as a 2012-13 Tennessee fund donor; and a Vol for Life poster featuring A.J. Johnson is pinned above my main filing cabinet.

Big Orange Mouse Pad featuring large Power T, and a 2013 football schedule.

Power T on my wallet, the Buckeye fans around me don't stand a chance.

If I take 'em to a game, they become Vol fans and something Orange finds it's way into their closet!

    GO VOLS!

  • My Father was an area supervisor at the DuPont plant in Chattanooga (yes way back then). He was raised a Tennessee fan during the mid to late Neyland years which he very often spoke fondly of. He did not attend college, he went into the military. He imparted his great love for all things Tennessee to me. I attended my first game at Neyland when I was around 5 with my mother and father. When the game was over (I can remember faint images of this... and my parents often talked about it in later years) as we were walking out of the stadium I burst into tears....when they, as very concerned parents, asked me what was wrong, I replied "Why did they stop playing !!??" Apparently I was heartbroken because the game had ended. BANG ... in the blood, hooked for life!!

I have many great memories of being in Knoxville on fall afternoons with my family, and friends, my dad's friends from Dupont. I can smell the wafts of kingsford briquets, Jack Daniels and cigars in the air, the earthy smells of the fall leaves, and the smell of the football my friends and I were tossing! Each fall I am drawn back to that place, and take my own little family now.

I have had many interests and hobbies in my life that have come and gone....the love of college football, especially Tennessee football has always been, and always will be, here to stay.

I cant imagine life any other way!

  • Born in east central alabama. Half family was alabama, Half family was auburn. I always loved orange but not that ugly auburn orange! watching manning play one year and from that moment on new the vols were my team. No matter what crap I got from everyone or trying to change me. Knew I was a vol through and through!!!

  • Born that way. Dad was a lifer in the Air Force so I was born in South Carolina (lived there for all of 2 weeks) but family is from Kingsport. Best memories are of working outside beside my uncle with John Ward on the transistor radio in the fall. Displayed the Big Orange all over the world during mine and my dad's military careers (his was much longer than mine).

  • Both of my parents went to UT.... Mom for undergrad..... Dad for law school.... I was born in December of 1982.... I'm not sure of the exact year I became a Vol, but it has been for as long as I can remember.... My Dad brainwashed me into being a fan as soon as I was old enough to retain memories.... LOL.....

I can honestly say that I've never had any other favorite teams in my life.... Just the Vols..... Primarily football first, but also a college hoops fan...... I've never had a favorite NFL, NBA, or MLB team.... There are certain players i cheer for (in the NFL its former Vols and a few others), but I've never had a specific favorite team other then the VOLS....

First game I remember watching on TV was the '90 Cotton Bowl.... First game I went to was in the fall of 1990 against UTEP.... The following year my parents took my brother and I to the UCLA game.....
