Hunter Is Not Ready For NFL

  • Ok, it still puzzles me that McShay has Hunter ranked as the top potential WR in the draft. Don't get me wrong, Hunter is VERY talented. However, I see a guy that needs more development. NFL DB's will eat him alive right now. He needs to get MUCH stronger and more physical. We also saw major issues this year with his hands. Way too many drops. This is by no means a plea to get him to stay, but I definitely think it would benefit him to do so. What does everyone else think?

    His strength isn't an issue, not with his skill set. See Randy Moss and AJ Green. He has good hands, just needs to work on his concentration. He's ready IMO.

    I can assure you that Moss and Green are MUCH more physical than Hunter. He'll struggle getting off the line of scrimmage in the NFL. He'll be no threat whatsoever across the middle. But hey, I just coach wide receivers coach for a living, what do I know!

    While you may coach WR's for a living, I have to agree with Volfan28. I believe Hunter wasn't nearly as physical as he could/should have been this year because of his knee injury. Also was likely the same reason he aligator chomped so many balls; he didn't wanna take a big hit, get hurt, and lose out on the money. Coming off an ACL as the top WR prospect in this years draft you know it was in his head not to get hurt. He knows the millions are his and I think he'll end up going pro. The risk of an injury is waaaay too high, and you know 2011's injury is still in his head. I'll be completely shocked if he returns. I know if I was in his position, I'd do the same thing.

  • Hunter struggled a year after tearing his ACL, everyone is not AP. By all accounts he is a great kid, a phenomenal athlete, and has shown tremendous potential. If I was an NFL team, I think grabbing a talent like Hunter in the first or second round would be just fine.

    Obviously I hope he comes back, because he is a dominant college receiver and we are better with him. That said, if he goes pro, I think he will be successful and I wish him the best.

    Agreed, everything is about POTENTIAL. These kids have the size, speed, strength, etc. and coaches know they can "coach 'em up."

    You have to factor in that he had a child this last year and needs/wants the NFL money, regardless of what round he goes. I personally think another year of being physical and playing in the Butch Jones offense could make him a sure fire 1st rounder, but just don't think he stays.

  • Any thought Hunter may have had about staying another year ended likely when he saw what happened to Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore may not ever recover to the point where he can sign a pro contract.

    Why would Hunter even take a chance?

  • No offense but I will take the guys that have evaluated draft prospects for years word. And that all seem pretty confident that Hunter is ready. It makes no sense for him to return to college next year. He will learn more in a summer of NFL camp than another year in college FB.

  • If I'm not mistaken, he has a kid too. That will play a major part in hiim deciding to turn pro. As one poster stated, the draft is all about potential, he's got more of that than just about anybody on the team.

  • No offense, but if you look at McShay and the other "experts" record, they project as many "sure things" that become busts as they get right. Fact of the matter is they, like myself, or anybody does not know what the future holds. Playing scared is not a good trait to have in the NFL. I hope Hunter has a great NFL career, but I do think another healthy year in college will serve him well. The fear is that he'll go, fail miserably out of the gate, and be out of the league within 4 to 5 years.

    The average NFL career, according to the NFL Players Association, is 3.3 years. So if he lasts 4 to 5 years, he will have beaten the odds.

    That said, Hunter has the potential to be an NFL great and play for 10-15 years if he can get healthy and stay that way. I think the tendency to play scared, which I think caused a lot of those drops this past season, typically ends when you get that contract.

  • If Hunter is a first round pick who last 5 years in the league, that is pretty good. I think the average NFL career is 2.5 year.

    Would Hunter possibly be a better player and more NFL ready with another year in college? Absolutly. But the point of declaring for the draft is not to enter when you are most likely to have immediate success, it is to enter when you hold the highest perceived value. He is by all accounts a very coachable player, so an NFL GM would have to draft him assuming that they could coach and develop him at the next level.

    Hunter only had two TD catches against SEC competition this year - one in OT against Missouri and one against Kentucky. When the competition got tough he had trouble getting open. That would concern me if I was the League. That's the difference between Rogers and Hunter - when Rogers was double teamed he found a way to get open, Hunter just disappeared.

    I know this isn't a popular opinion but I think he is way overrated as a receiver. He has tremendous athletic talent but that doesn't mean he'll be a great receiver. It was also obvious this year that he was more interested in not getting hurt so he could go to the League rather than playing WR for Tennessee. To me, he was the most disappointing Vol.

    Having said that, if he can get the money by going pro now he should do it. I'm not going to criticize a kid for having the potential to secure his financial future.
