Hunter: No excuse for late drops

Justin Hunter thinks Tennessee’s best players need to be better in big spots. The junior wide receiver and highly touted NFL prospect includes himself in that list.

  • Hunter does not give excuses, you have to admire him for that.

  • Pretty good attitude and comments from Hunter, but there was one thing that bothers me in his statement:

" I'm just telling guys we have to play 60 minutes against good teams. "

You need to play 60 minutes against ALL teams!!

  • This is an all too familiar theme - play for the whole 60 minutes and don't quit. Unfortunately, until we actually do it, we will be known as quitters.

  • There is blame on both sides of the ball. Players have to make plays. Tyler, CP, Hunter, Rivera, Neal all have to want the ball in the second half and learn to be clutch. Our defense had some alignment break downs, and poor tackling exibitions. We must be able to close out games. They keys 2 series that swung momentum was the 4th down play they went for and didn't get(fake punt) in the 3rd. Our first play we got a intentional grounding call, went 3 and out and punted it back to them. Their first play(Burtton) after that went 80, off tackle. I wont mention what player was out of position multiple times in the 3rd & 4th.(#10) If we had scored on that opportunity I believe the score would have been flipped. Yet, we didn't and it wasn't. Lessoned learned, lets get it fixed and be ready for Georgia. Go Vols!!!

  • I would say it was a combination of several things, and exhaustion. I attend this game every year and noticed are defense was gassed(hands on hips, end of 2nd qtr and 11:00 minutes into third. Also bray and receivers decided to play like they never met each other in 3rd and 4th qtr and florida secondary did not do to bad.against us. Bray also seemed to be getting hurried mid way through third and seemed to start panicking pre-maturely out of the pocket. looked mad uncomfortable. in other games he looked in command and would direct receivers back while flushing the pocket completing the pass. the environment at neyland was intense. game hyped up even more by espn gameday. i think dooley has control of this team, he is learning the hard way along with the team. sucks, but no way around it. if they make the correct adjustments and they have the staff to do it. they might be able to win a couple of sec games. i think its gonna be one more year, as hard as it is to say.

Technically, against teams like Akron, GA State, etc. Justin Hunter won't play for 60 minutes...

Technically, against teams like Akron, GA State, etc.The VOLS DO need to play for the entire 60 minutes. Anything less leads to not playing for 60 minutes against good teams.

against those teams you like 2 pull your 1st string so the 2nd and 3rd string can get some experience and you don't want 2 risk injury 2 your best players. that's the way it's always been if the game is decided.

  • We need to learn to run the ball. I wish DD would come out and run until we get it down. If we win 7 to 0 it's alright. Let 's learn how to run the ball. Put some other linemen in there if the first string can't do it. We know we can throw it.

I agree with getting the backups experience but If the coaches think fatigue was part of the problem, I think the best way to do it is more substitutions early to get them accustomed to playing with the 1's.

    Tom,

I agree..but my point is that the teams needs 100% effort for the entire 60 minutes against every opponent.

Getting into the habit of playing hard for 40 minutes against bad opponents will become a habit and carry over into games against good opponents.

Anything less than 100% effort is unacceptable no matter who the VOLS have on the field or who they are playing. If CDD allows anything less than that, then we are in for a long season.

i get what your sayin but i look at it like if you're getting tired 2 early then you are not in good enough shape and you take care of that during practice and work outs. thats something i was worried about during preseason practice. it seemed like alot of our more athletic players were not getting as much work as the rest of the team.

100% concur. In fact i said literally the exact same thing on TOS. If we score on the possession after the failed fake punt, I am convinced we win the game. I think (with the clarity of hindsight) if we had run the ball straight at them and pounded out a TD on the ground there, it would have completely deflated the gators. There was a time (see e.g. the drive after the "he stumbled and he fumbled!!" play by Clint Stoerner at the end of the Arkansas game from the '98 championship season) when that is exactly what we would have done. Put it on the shoulders of our OL and smashed the other team in the mouth.

    Tom,

I'm not saying that the first teamers should be in the entire game, but instead, what I am saying is that the team, (1's or 2's or whoever is on the field) needs to give 100% effort for the entire 60 minutes

The Vols do, I agree. I mean Justin Hunter and the other starters do not.
