I am hearing less of Gruden and more of Petrino

  • First let me say I am not an insider or know a friend who is a sister of a former player who once hung out with an Mike Hart. I am a regular guy who reads the boards and follows what everyone else thinks. That being said if Gruden is a pipe dream and he is not coming.....Do we go after Petrino after all he has done in the past? Is he the answer to our denfense???? I know he is a winner but he comes with a lot of baggage. Please don't go crazy on the downvotes I am not saying we need to hire him I am just saying the rumors for Petrino are picking up. What are your thoughts on Petrino and has anyone else heard the same?

    UTConnor

  • No, I would be shocked if we go for Petrino. It's certainly a topic of conversation on message boards but as you said, he comes with too much baggage. He may end up at Lowder U if they cut Chizic loose.

  • Hell no Petrino is a proven liar. if we cant get Gruden we need to go after Charlie Strong.

An insider you are not. Who is Mike Hart?

  • Petrino is even less likely than Gruden and Gruden is pretty much zero chance. All this talk about new coaches that is STILL going on is absolutely ridiculous. The only likely coach for us next year is Dooley. He's the most likely anyway, by a pretty long shot.

  • I just read an ESPN Insider aritcle in their Rumor Central column that claims 247sports.com believes that our short list of possible replacements for Dooley is Gruden, Petrino, and Gundy, in that order. TIFWIW

I'm with you. If Dooley get us to a bowl game then I'd rather keep him. Only way Dooley should go is if we miss a bowl game or we have an absolute homerun hire.

That's spin on ESPNs part. 247 bought FBrumormill in order to get in on the rumor game without sacrificing their journalistic integrity. A better statement would have 247 reports that this is a rumor.

Ok, whatever. I just saw it on ESPN and figured I'd share for any non-Insiders. Didn't see it anywhere on 247.

I'm absolutely shocked at the amount of people who would rather have Dooley then Strong. There is absolutely no comparison between the two. Strong would be a HUGE upgrade. He has Louisville at 10 in the BCS for crying out loud. Dooley could spend the next 30 years at TN and never get us that high.

  • I rank them:
    1) Gruden which is pretty unlikely
    2) Other pipe dream candidates which are probably even less likely (Peterson, Patterson, Kelly, Gundy)
    3) Strong - I'm a believer. I think he could do well here.
    4) Dooley - but only until a home run hire become available.
    ...
    926) Petrino

I say absolutely zero chance we even make an offer to Petrino. Hart knows better than that. Yes, he wins football games, but bad PR is the last thing UT needs. He needs to work his way back up to respectability before he's going to get any offers from big time schools. Who wants to be the school that puts that guy up on a podium and lets him represent their school? I think Kentucky makes the most sense because it's a rare chance for them to get a winning coach on the cheap, and they need to get some kind of advantage if they're going to compete. What they don't realize is that if they hire him, the city of Lexington will collapse inside itself by the moral vacuum created with their two prominent coaches.

Gundy a popular name in SEC?

Were now hearing that Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy might be a candidate at two SEC schools: Arkansas... and Tennessee. Tennesse

I'm with you on Petrino smasher. Local and national media would have a field day with that hire. They would make sure we looked like idiots to all the listners and viewers. And IMO, we would be idiots.

  • It kind of shows how easy it is for things to get reported/seen as legimate these days.

It is almost an insult to the program to suggest we would hire Petrino one year after how he left Arkansas

So, given the fact that Strong has never been a head coach in the SEC, how would you compare the two? What empirical evidence do you have the Strong is a HUGE upgrade over Dooley? He's going to have to be so great of an upgrade that he overcomes the nature dip that happens when you transition YET ANOTHER coaching staff/system into the program that needs no more transition - it needs stability. Getting BCS bids in a weak conference is a FAR FAR cry from getting one in the SEC.

On second thought, that could be a good thing as long as he aint coach and as long as the motorcycle took them far far away from here.......to much??? Naaaahh!
