I believe we have gotten a GEM

Just my thinking but Kiffin fired us up and we thought we were headed back to dominance under him and he left us. Dooley also came in and said all the right things, and we know how that turned out.
With that being said I do think this one is different. This guy gets it and he definitely gives me more confidence then Dooley did. 4 conference titles in 6 years and a pretty darn good record as a coach is pretty impressive IMO. However this is a whole different ball game coaching against Saban, Spurrier, Muschamp, etc.
I am fired up about Butch and excited about the future. I really get the feeling we gotta steal with this guy. He truly is a players coach, and his intensity an effort is gonna play a big difference in a lot of games this year.
However I prefer to see what happens starting August 31st before I start getting to fired up. I'm excited but I want to see some kind of wins before I start getting really fired up. The fact is though, this guy will either get us back to glory or die trying. I do like that a lot about him, and I'm excited to see what your gonna do Butch. Just for what it's worth I am a young guy.

You make very valid points and like you said Butch will die trying. His work ethic is just insane. He's already done more work, recruiting wise, in his first 2 months than Dooley done in 3 yrs.

Chill bro, I don't the poster meant any disrespect. It looked as he was putting humor in his post? I mean comparing someone to a Vandy fan is like calling them a SOB! Lol! Also just for the record I'm an older Vol fan myself and we don't have the swagger that's obvious but until Peyton, Jamal or Al walks back on the field dressed in orange then some of us will have to talk our team up! Look at last season, yea we stunk the field up but I still bragged all of the time about our AWESOME playmakers on the field. We were in EVERY game we played last year except for Bama and then Vandy...well we just decided not to play at all but with CBJ on the sideline we win more of those games than we lose. Also it's not running off at the mouth it's just telling the truth! You can say "oh he has to coach in the SEC before you can be a good coach" really??? Tressel was at a division 2 school and he did just fine at OSU, Saban didn't come from the SEC and neither did Sumlin, musCHUMP, or Freeze. So really your whole "you gotta be from the SEC is kinda weak" so take you Valium or your Geritol and just chill

I was speaking in generalizations. I obviously don't know this person or how old he is. That's the problem with message boards.

Peoples feelings are hurt too easily. Take this stuff with a grain of salt.

  • I too am optimistic about Coach Jones and believe our support as fans is needed. We certainly all have opinions and will have various criticisms in the future, I know I certainly expect to have some of my own.

I was never thrilled with Coach Kiffin, I did not like his attitude but since he was "our" coach i was willing to go along. From the things I heard he said about Tennessee and its traditions I'm glad he's gone. Coach Dooley had been exposed to very good coaching and had a name from his dad so it got him some time. I felt his organization skills were fine and he had vision, but it never seemed to get connected with t players and the results.

Coach Jones has won and brings a passion back to the sideline. It may take some time before we are favored in all the games, but I believe I'll be traveling to Neyland this fall liking our odds better every game.

Lets wait and see before we start bragging about how great our new coach is.

Of course, Kiffin and Dooley both had losing records as head coaches coming in. CBJ has won 4 conference titles in 6 years as a head coach. So - while I agree winning games is the ultimate yard stick, there is better reason to believe CBJ than the last two coaches. Winning is a habit. Neither of the last two coaches had that habit coming in.

Whatever?! we all know your just a Vandy fan in disguise! lol! I know man, my comments are taken the wrong way a lot of times to. You don't offend me as long as you don't mind me giving you a hard time back! Trust me, I've read many of your post and I know you're a VFL and that's all that matters really!!

  • I love what Jones is doing. He has an attitude that will turn the players around. We have good players we always lacked the coaching!

  • I'm 18. I feel I handle some things better than my older friends on the board haha. But everything aside WE ALL WANT THE SAME THING!!!! I don't think I should be compared to a Vandy fan for having optimism or talking up OUR coach. I'd be ashamed to be a Vandy fan. They win once every 20 years and they own the state. Anchor down? Nicky Satan? Vandy logic I guess. I'm a VFL!!! GBO!!!

  • Is it impossible to agree with both sides of this argument?

I, like many of you, have been through the previous 3 break-ups in Vol Nation. Fulmer hurt, I didn't want to let him go and still don't think we should have. That, of course, is neither here nor there. Kiffin infuriated me. He was the new shiny hire that energized the fan base in all of the wrong ways. He got our last key win, that tromping of Georgia between the hedges. It will be a good while until I forget the mosh-pit he started on the sideline in the middle of the game. That game was the last time I really felt like we were the Tennessee of old. Then he left us brokenhearted but it turned out to be possibly the best thing that could have happened to us. Then came Dooley, the "Uh, who?" hire. In the beginning I was excited, but that quickly died along with our ability to win football games.

My point of all of this is simple. Through all of the change in the past 6 years, I have NEVER felt as good about the caretaker of our program as I do now. Am I cautiously optimistic? Yes. CBJ has yet to prove himself on the field (in Orange & White, the dude has flat out won everywhere else). Am I wildly and almost uncontrollably excited on the inside? You betcha. I understand not letting excitement get the best of you but you simple cannot sit here and tell me that this feels remotely similar to the last 6 years, even without a product on the field to judge.

Either way, cautiously optimistic or wildly and openly excited, CBJ is our head coach and I feel great things coming. Like almost everyone has said, no matter what we're all VFL's and by God we're gonna support our new coach through thick and thin. Go Vols! Go CBJ!

There are two schools of thought in the bringing in of new coaches.

1.) Blindly be optimistic and take everything the coach says as the gospel. Not a bad way to be, but you also set yourself up to be burned if he doesn't pan out (Dooley) or if he leaves to go elsewhere (Kiffin). What do you gain by this school of thought? The ability to say you were right if they pan out? Like I said, it's not a bad way to be, just a way to approach a coaching hire.

2.) Be patient, and let the coach's results speak for themselves. After learning from the Kiffin experiment, I have taken the patient approach. If the coach wants to fire up the fans of the aforementioned mindset, that's fantastic. We need our fiery fans to be fired up. But he has to be weary that those same fans will be looking for his head the second he makes the school look foolish because of said comments.

Butch Jones has made some fantastic strides in repairing the fans that have felt scorned by the last two coaches. He has also been successful at every school he has been in. But I haven't seen him take on a job like this, so I will remain skeptical. I reserve the right to be this way, and I don't criticize you for your choice. Just throwing out my thought process for the board.

    As always, Go Vols.

    Well said.

You seem to be forgetting that he hasn't done anything yet against Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and the other SEC teams that are ahead of us.

Look, I could spin things and make CBJ look like the greatest hire ever, I just choose not to. That's all. And I have faith. That's why I'm looking forward to the season to start and not complaining about him.

I'm used to not having to run off at the mouth about how great my school and coach is. It used to be understood. No talk required. You younger fans out there are not. That's something a Vandy fan would do.

Thanks for calling me younger I'm actually 46 and have been True blooded ORANGE my whole life

Edit: It blows my mind how censoreding crazy people are. DV away censoreds

Dooley was nothing like butch man. Doey didn't want to be at tennessee forever. He didn't think tennessee as his dream job. He only cared about getting paid. CBj is amazing, evidenced by his previous career. Take a look. He wins everywhere he's been. Doey has not. Kiffin has not!!! Kiffin can't do it with ALL 5 star players. CBj is proven to be a winner. Dooley was and is not. Dooley and kiffin ruined tn football. We have the coach that will-can bring us back to glory days. Finally. GO VOLS!
