I think Dooley will demote Sal tomorrow...

  • in an effort to improve the D, show he's willing to make a change mid-season, and to save his job. A good leader would not let this go on, unless their hands are tied by someone above them.

I posted this on a couple of other threads, but one way to do it without too much change would be make Conklin DC since he has experience there. Let Ansley coach DBs, demote Sal to just LBs. Others have ideas on how to make defensive changes NOW?

This is eerily reminiscent of how Fulmer lost his job by hiring Clawson.

I think it may be in the works to do this on the QT so as not to hang Sal out to dry. Not only are our guys confused but he seems to make the wrong calls in critical situations. I hate it for the guy but this is as bad as it gets...I hope.

  • I didn't mention this in my original post, but was thinking then "what D do you run?" Clearly Sal's D is not working - they are lost, confused, out of position, etc. I think I'd go back to the 4-3 we had last year, most of the guys know it, keep it pretty vanilla and not "multiple", and see what we can do with that. It can't get any worse.

Not a bad idea - what has you think it may be in the works?

As much as I would like to see it happen, no chance imo.

  • So who is to blame for our secondary being terrible? Sunseri or Conklin and Ansley? Combination maybe. I'd loves new Def coordinator next week, but who? Plus how does that affect recruiting, Sal seems to be great in that area.

What makes you think there's no chance watauga? Just curious. I wrote my post because Dooley's post-game comments seem like he's done with it and knows he needs to do something drastic to save his job. That's why I have a sneaking feeling we'll hear he's doing something about it tomorrow.

Don't really know, but I recall Sunseri hiring Ansley because he can teach his techniques to the DBs. If it's Sunseri's scheme that doesn't work then I'd say it's the scheme that has them look so bad. That would account for them being out of position a lot, thus also looking slow because they're chasing WRs from the wrong place.

The "who" for DC is Conklin. I think it's too late to try to hire someone.

As for recruiting, I don't know how it will impact that, but at this point I'd worry less about that and more about getting the D fixed to give us a chance to win the last 3. I think it we could improve the D, win the last 3, then recruits might take notice and not jump ship. Just a thought...

I just think Dooley is too stubborn. He said all off season Sunersi was his #1 guy. He's said he's not going to adjust play calling. Just don't see him pulling the plug.

I don't think he does either, but I'd also like to think he'd do everything in his power to try and save his job. Stubbornness has partly lead to his undoing IMO.

Agree. Stubbornness is a close relative to arrogance. I like some arrogance in a coach but...

Arrogance isn't a problem when your winning, Dooley has Saban's arrogance with a losing record, which IMO, is a terrible combination. Sometimes you have to put your pride aside and do what's best for the program, even if it means throwing Sal under the bus.

Sorry. I just haven't seen arrogance from Dooley lately. He seems pretty beaten down in my opinion.

On topic, I don't see how you change DC's at this point in the season and expect the D to get better. IMO it's too late to make major changes to the schemes and the next three wins are crucial. So I think you just hang on and try to fix a few things. And make the change after the regular season.

RockyTopAtl made a good point earlier when he pointed out that Johnny Majors made a DC change in season and it helped. No guarantees.

In Dooley's case, stubbornness has shown more lately than arrogance has, but with him they are almost one in the same.

If they make a change at DC, do you think it will get any worse? We gave up 714 yds to Troy today! Almost every team we've played this year has put up their offensive season high's against this defense! We all know it's not going to get any better, they've had 9 games to show improvement and they've gotten worse with ever game, so I really don't see a huge risk in making a change, we're already having to try and outscore everyone anyway, because we can't keep the other team from scoring.

    Wes,
I admit, you were right about Wilcox being a good DC and I was wrong in saying Sal was better....I have been humbled to say the least...lol

  • Yes let's promote the coach of the worst position group

Or we could just keep Sal as DC, and know exactly what we're going to get....lit up biggrin

Could be accurate. I'm thinking we can't get worse so go back to something they know, simplify it and take your chances.

    NashvilleVol87

  • Kind of like when schools in the 80s would fire the head coach. They'd come out running a simplified wishbone.

Or when Jeff Fisher took over the Oilers in midseason. Good bye, run and shoot. Hello, I formation.

Based on his comments today I think his stubbornness may have been smacked over the head and he may see the need for immediate change.

    NashvilleVol87

  • Just some growing pains. Stay the course. Don't want to do anything hasty. Everyone just trust the head coach. He knows what he's doing.
