If Not Gruden Then What Happens...

To the coach we do hire. Very seldom would a coach take a job where it was so obvious he was not the first choice. What happens to recruiting, coaching hires, how much time he has to succeed. There is even more to consider than what I have mentioned but it's going to be another hornets nest for anyone not named Gruden. JMO

Not everybody gets there 1st choice. Not a big deal at all. Charlie Strong would accept this job with open arms.

I think Drizz is right that we would get a good second choie and move on.
However, there would be a fanbase meltdown of biblical proportions and we would not get nearly the ticket sales and recruiting bump we would have gotten with Gruden.

Actually it is a big deal. Under normal circumstances what you say might be true but these are about as abnormal a set of circumstances as you will find. Based on tradition(which you have rightly pointed out), ticket sales, other revenue, fan expectation, total lack of patience...this will be a nightmare for anyone who doesn't bring a major winning profile and even then not winning and recruiting at a high level will immediately foster comparisons...if only we had gotten Gruden.

Saban wasn't Bama's first choice either...... A little guy named Rich Rodriguez backed out in the 11th hour. Didn't seem to bother Saban.

To me, that's it. If we just get out-bid by an NFL team who offers an 8 year contract as Coach and GM, with complete control, and $10 million per year, people will understand.
