If There Was a Bidding War...

  • ...between Arkansas and UT, wouldn't Mike Slive have the authority to shut it down? I was under the impression that as SEC commissioner, he would do anything to prevent schools driving coaching salaries through the roof. Doesn't he act as the figurative salary cap? I've heard Saban has that clause in his contract that he must remain the highest-paid SEC coach; that would surely be broken if Ark/Tenn went haywire bidding on Gruden. Not to mention, other schools would have undoubtedly driven salaries much higher than their current horizon.

    Assuming Slive could shut it down, that gives Tennessee the advantage in my eyes. We all know we own the X factors (Cindy, family, East TN land) in this 'suspected' battle for Gruden.

    Can anyone shed some light on this? My boss was initially explaining this to me. (FWIW he used to work in the Florida Athletics Dept and his best friend was UT's former NCAA Compliance Director under Kiffin/Fulmer).

  • He has no interest in Arky. Hell, you'd probably have to pay ME at least 2 or 3 mill to move there, and I've never coached a game in my life. And I live in NEW JERSEY!!!

  • Slive serves as commissioner of the SEC. It would appear his job is to control the inflation of coaching salaries; keep them at a modest level. Otherwise Saban would be making $10m (he might as well, he makes so much more than that for the school). Likewise, other SEC schools with money to spend would be putting ludicrous offers in front of hot NFL coaches and college coaches. Money can lure anyone anyway from anywhere.

    Just wondering if anyone knew anything about the procedural rules surrounding a situation like this in the SEC. It makes perfect sense to me that Slive would be concerned.

  • Slive might be concerned, but he could not arbitrarily limit the salary of a coach at a specific school.

    Also, why does he care about inflation of coaching salaries? If the entire SEC wen't out and hired NFL level coaching staffs and paid them accordingly, and the investment proved worth it, that would just mean more money for the SEC in TV contracts, bowls, etc...

  • Not price, his control demands. You always have someone else on the line to really use as leverage. Negotiating 101.

    Dude if you think he is going to Arkansas your out of your mind they will get a good coach I'm sure but he already said there is one school he would go to and that's Tennessee
