If we hire Butch Jones

  • Let me start off by saying I try not to post controversial things because honestly I don't want to be down voted and ruin my rep, however, as someone who goes to at least three games a year and spends what I can to support my Vols, I must say that Dave Heart is full of crap if he settles for Butch Jones. This is not a great hire and will do nothing for perception across the country or the fan base, not to mention recruiting. I must say this here I WILL support him and the Vols in HOPE he can win, but right now I find it very difficult to be excited at all. I feel there are better coaches available and UT isn't willing to try. Wes and others said UT was the best job available and I am sorry but this hire won't be in the top 3-5 hires made this year and deeply saddens me. I will finish with I PRAY he turns out to be who we need but I have little confidence he is and am afraid we just took a step sideways and will struggle for another five years.

  • You shouldn't be downvoted for stating your opinion. But, why are people who were clamoring for Strong adamantly against Jones? He has the same record as Strong in the same amount of time coaching, in the same conference! And don't say he inherited a much better team, because in the 3rd year Jones went 9-3 and Stong 10-2, they are still basically the same caliber coach. So why the big dispatiy in love/hate?

    I think at least in my case is that from what Swain and some others have said, recruits would more likely come here if Strong came, for whatever reason. So I feel like an immediate impact would be made in recruiting with Strong won't be with Jones.

    Because Charlie Strong is a known quantity in this conference and he has long and extensive ties to recruiting literally everywhere we would want to go. Hiring Charlie Strong saves this class and sets us up to compete with the big boys on the recruiting trail. Hiring Butch Jones puts us in the same situation we were in with Dooley, only Dooley actually had experience and recruiting contacts down here and wasn't half as good an actual coach.

    I don't think you should be so worried, Puddin, but I appreciate that you stated your opinion like a civilized human. I can tell you're a VFL.

    While His Butchness wasn't my dream hire, I gotta say this for the guy: he had by some reports FOUR chances to take a job better than he had at Cincinnati in the past few weeks, and he HELD OUT for the Tennessee job. He held out through Gruden rumors, Jimbo Fisher rumors, Mike Gundy home visits and what looked like a done-deal with Charlie Strong because UT was the job he wanted.

    That fact alone puts wind in my orange sails, and I hope it does yours, too.

    Yes he had contacts. He didn't suck up to the local guys but he did go get some players, don't kid yourself.

    And Yes Butch has a higher rated class right now, but Butch's class is twice as big and Cincinatti is in Ohio while Louisville is in Kentucky. Ohio is full of good football players, Kentucky is not.

    He also beat Strong out for Big East coach of the year as well......but his ability to go big in the SEC remains to be seenvols

    I'm not kidding myself, I read where 32 of 37 coaches in the Tennessee/Georgia/Alabama area gave Dooley a failing grade when it came to recruiting. Of course he got some local guys, some of those local guys would have come to Tennessee if we hadn't won a single game in ten years. Here's a refresher in case you forgot?
