I'll just be honest here.

  • Tee Martin was one of my two favorite players ever. The idea of him back on UT's sidelines, reeling in recruits, telling them about how great UT is and helping to restore our program was a wonderful one. The last few years have just been one long sequential kick in the balls. From Fulmer's firing, to Kiffin, to letting that idiot Dooley run the show, to the last few weeks, it all culminates for me in a childhood idol of mine refusing to come home and help fix things.

So the entire Vol For Life thing just rings hollow for me right now. Nothing about being a fan of this team is fun anymore. I shouldn't care as much as I do, but I just can't help it. The rest of my life is fine, so why do I subject myself to this constant disappointment? Why did I choose to attend UT over more prestigious institutions? Why am I invested? Why can't I just stop caring? I'll tell you why. Because I am a Vol For Life. It isn't a slogan for me. It isn't something I say to my buddies or hashtag on my tweets. It is who I am.

So you can say it's not personal, or it was a business decision, or his wife didn't want to come, or whatever other justification you want to give. This tarnishes one of my childhood heroes for me, and pretty much renders the whole Vol For Life concept meaningless. Right or wrong that's how I feel.

"I will give my all for Tennessee today" just doesn't seem to carry any weight.

This may just be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me as a fan. It may be time to reassess the whole thing.

Anyway, I'm done for a while. Ya'll have fun.

    Off the ledge, JPSke!

Would you expect Peyton to come back now to help coach QBs? No? Why not? He's VFL, right? Would we expect Chavis, UT Alum and VFL, to come back just because we have had a few down years? No? Then why should we expect Tee to come back right now??

I really wanted him to come back, and I admit that today's news is a bitter pill to swallow. But if the last letter in VFL really means "Life", then (a) I'm here for life, and (b) Tee has awhile longer to come back after gaining more experience and doing the right stuff to really advance his own career. Frankly I'm not so sure he would really learn as much over the next couple of years as he might under some other established program. And who knows? Maybe he'll be the HC in 5-10 years.

Take a break. Walk outside in the fresh air for a few days. Enjoy the holidays! When we get close to spring practice or the start of the season, let's reassess things then. But if you're truly VFL, then remember L is for Life. To quote Prince, "Electric word 'life' - it means forever, and that's a mighty long time." (From Let's Get Crazy).

  • I'm not trying to kick you while you are down, but please remember he helped lead UT to a NC.

He doesn't owe it to you to come help fix things here. Do you think any ex players are calling Tee right now and saying he isn't a real VFL for making a choice he felt was better for his career/family?

  • To me, VFL is a brotherhood. I'd bet Al Wilson, Jamal Lewis, and Peerless Price wanted him back here, and they probably wanted him bad. However, I sincerely believe that each of them supports Tee, not because they aren't VFLs, but because they are Tee's brothers.
I believe Tee wants to come back. Just because it didn't work out this time doesn't mean it won't in the future. Maybe in 10 or 15 or however many years we are looking for a coach and he is a big name up-and-comer because of the time he's spent at USC (recruiting ties in CA, coaching the best WRs, etc). Then that is set up to be a splash hire that Vol fans want. My point is that I don't know what will happen, and neither do you or Tee or even The Great Wes Rucker, but USC gives him the best opportunity to succeed and pursue other opportunities that further that success.
