I'm gonna stir that Gruden pot

  • I just talked a friend and he had an interesting perspective. Full disclosure: I have no inside sources and neither does this friend of mine. Also, I'm posting this partially just to see what everybody's reaction will be, and partially just to piss Wes off.

My friend said he thinks if we don't have a coach by the 15th, he thinks its Gruden. He said it is POSSIBLE that all of this Strong, Fedora, Gundy stuff COULD be a smokescreen. Gruden's agent's quote COULD be a smokescreen.

Let's look at history. When Saban came out and said, I'm not going to coach at Alabama and then turned around and did, that looked bad. Hart knows this. From what I gather, Hart plays his cards close to his chest. Hart also said it was going to be done pretty quickly. I have just as many ants in my pants as most of the Volunteer faithful, and that probably skews my perspective, but it seems like this thing is getting dragged out a little bit. The whole Gruden thing a couple of weeks back was getting leaked like crazy. It was on fire. His kids are touring CAK and Webb, yadda yadda yadda. A lot of people, and I mean a lot, were all saying its a done deal, then all of a sudden, poof, nope, not happening. But Gruden doesn't come out and say anything, it's his agent. I don't follow coaching searches as much as a lot of people, but I haven't really heard many agents getting quoted in the press for something like that. And why would he? Doesn't seem like it helps him out any, and it doesn't seem very professional to use a word like "fantasy".

So, the conspiracy theory that I'm gonna put on the table is this: It's still Gruden. Due to his obligations to ESPN, everybody is holding off on the announcement. All of this stuff with the other candidates is just Hart going through the motions after he put out the Gruden fire earlier. Keep in mind, to him and the big time boosters, we are the masses. We are the crazy, bloodthirsty, impatient, rabid hoard of fans. We need to be managed. To Hart, we, the fan base, are revenue. Which it seems like to me, Hart's main priority right now is getting the Athletic Department's financial situation squared away. What better way to do that than drop that Gruden bomb after all. The fan base goes bananas, and what will we do when we go bananas? We will deck ourselves out in Tennessee Orange head to toe. (That equals $$$ for the Ath. Dept.) We go buy tickets to as many games as we can. (That equals $$$ for the Ath. Dept.) Also, Tennessee instantly becomes a strong national brand. You know the goobers I'm talking about, the guys who go out and buy the hat of the team that wins the World Series, right after they win the World Series. Yeah, we'll be trendy.

Alright Vol fans. Tear it to shreds, but if it turns out I'm right, I better be getting some of that "street cred".

  • One thing different is that Alabama had Rich Rod hired and had offered to someone else before Rod after the initial Saban "I am not going to Alabama" thing. Rich Rod backed out so they went hard at Saban again. I don't think that is/will be the case here.

    +1 for your optimism.

I'm gonna let Bomani Jones handle this though.... http://www.sbnation.com/2012/12/3/3721480/jon-gruden-coaching-rumors-bomani-jones

Actually not a completely unreasonable theory. I think a lot of people are waiting to see if it goes past next week and then you will see the Gruden rumors out in full force again. I don't think it's going to happen, but I will definitely change mind if it goes past next weekend.

  • He literally asks for credit in the last sentence. It's all the same. This is the same as the 400 other Gruden rumor posts we've heard for months wanting credit for things we've all heard multiple times. If the world ends December 21st and the Myans are right, I want street cred. You heard it here first.

Welcome to the board. welcome My question for you is, who doesn't want "street cred"? Who doesn't want to be the "You heard it here first"? I'm not reporting facts, I just had a little down time and wanted to put that out there because it sure would be fun. If my stuff really bothers you, or other people's for that matter, you can click on that ghostbuster looking thing right under my name, and you won't have to see anything I say. It's the ignore button.

Bammers will tell you up and down that their money boosters made the decision to "un-hire" RichRod after Mal Moore had decided to hire him because they had decided Saban was their man.

Whether that's true or he actually backed out on Bama I couldn't tell you.

For the record, I'd like to present to the court that I DID try to sandbag myself pretty hard for most of the beginning of my post.

  • Nothing against you at all Greg. There just seems to be sooo many people wanting credit for rumors we've all heard 100 times. Not even saying that your theory isn't valid.

  • This isn't necessarily directed toward you Gregg Baird, but the other 99,000 Gruden hangers on. What happens if Strong, Fedora or Gundy is named head coach by the end of the week?

Does that automatically mean Hart is throwing up another smoke screen by hiring a guy, but he's going to instantly fire the guy in two weeks when Gruden suddenly becomes available?

Food for thought. I'm waiting on the first Gruden post after a coach announcement.

No offense taken. I live out in the country away from East TN, so I'm about as far out of the loop as someone on this site can be. I just talked to my friends who are Vol fans and its the first time I've heard that angle . . . and I hadn't seen that on this board yet. So it was the 1st time for me.

    Kindly,

Personally, I would prefer Strong over Gruden. I think, right now, he is the PERFECT hire. But, whenever the announcement does come, you can bet I'll be racing to the nearest computer to spew some more conspiracy theories. And yes, they will be chock full of Gruden.
