I'm the AD, this is MY Top 5.

  • 1. Jon Gruden
    2. Bob Stoops
    3. Jimbo Fisher
    4. Jim Mora Jr.
    5. Phillip Fulmer

NO WAY I let myself get into the area of Golden, Strong or the Butches.

If I can't get my top 4, I crawl to Phillip if I have to and don't stop until he comes back to the Hill.

So, how about you, you're the AD, who do you look to hire?

    FedVol

  • Phillip Fulmer will never coach at the University of Tennessee again.

I'm good with your top 4 as the top guys. As far as the 5th candidate (assuming Gary Patterson is not a possibility), I actually could get behind Roman, Strong, or Fedora. The more I have pondered these guys, the more that I would feel comfortable with their hiring. They wouldn't be the slam dunk that we would immediately need, but would be a large step in the right direction.

Roman's offenses are fun to watch and he is widely respected in the coaching community. High school coaches would "talk sense into" the players to give him a fair shake, even though he doesn't necessarily have a "sexy" name right now.

Strong has won in the Big East (I know, I know...it's a Big East schedule), but he has won with Big East players. You get that guy with Big Boy programs, and he recruits like the Big Boys. Buck Fitzgerald (on another site) said that "5 star players moved to the edge of their seat" to see Strong get a shot with Tennessee. That is strong IMO.

Fedora is an offensive genius and has won everywhere, even with the dark cloud in Chapel Hill. He'd be fine, especially if he picked up an Ellis Johnson as a DC. Guy can get it done.

  • Sorry, but if you were AD and hired Fulmer, even I would burn mattresses. nono I doubt Stoops is an option but JMO. The others I could live with but would take a wait and see approach.

    I would go:
    1 Gruden
    2 Gundy
    3 Mora
    4 Strong
    5 Roman

I'd be okay with Fisher, just something about him that I cqn't put my finger on. Also wouldn't mind Butch Davis if the rumor is true that he's cleared of any wrong doing. Do not want B Jones, Fulmer or Petrino. Fulmer's a good guy, but his time had passed. There's not gonna be any "gettin' the band back together" in Knoxville.

  • I don't get the Charlie Strong love.

Strong has been 7-6, 7-6 and 9-2 at Louisville. 9-2 in a VERY down year for a VERY weak conference. Over three seasons he is 12-8 in the Conference. That doesn't translate to winning in the SEC. 2013 will be his 30th yr in coaching and only his third as a head coach, there is more to that than what color he and his wife is.

    FedVol

  • Roman has no head coaching experience and is out for me, and for Dave Hart.

Fedora has a moderately impressive resume, but Tennessee at this point in history can not afford to take a guy with so little experience in pressure situations such as the SEC or NFL.

I like Gundy, but again, not enough pressure packed expierence, and getting him to leave his alma mater where that T. Boone money is, is probably a pipe dream.

Roman, Fedora, and Strong were each at the bottom of the wish list. They were thrown in as an "I'll take it".

Strong knows what the SEC is and has a defensive background. We could (potentially) retain some of our offensive staff, have some continuity, and keep rolling there while he fixes the defense. He understands recruiting and according to corner36, actually has top-flite players' attention. But they will NOT play for him in the "Big Least". It's intriguing, but not preferred.

Roman's lack of head coaching experience may be overcome by his successful stints in both the college and professional ranks. Other than that, yes, he is a risk,

Fedora is the biggest reach, but I could stomach him because I believe in his track record.

None of the guys are in the "top tier" for me, but I wouldn't toss ashes on my head or anything like that.

Check out his defenses at South Carolina and Florida when he was the DC. The guy has recruited the SEC forever and has ties all over. Then go check out Louisville's record before he got there. He's also starting a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores. The guy can coach.

My top 5 is based on a scenario where I couldn't get my top guys and absolutely decided I wasn't going to "settle".

I understand some think that Phillip would be settling, but I don't.

He's proven, he 's hungrier than ever, he's still young enough to be successful and in a living room I don't think anyone on my list would do better with the parents of recruits. Put the right staff members under him (See Graham, Tee, Zook, etc) and the recruiting Juggernaut that was Fulmer would be reborn.

He would and could be more successful than the "taking a chance" guys IMO.

But I like the discussion, thanks for your time and thoughts for sure.

    1.agreed homerun hire
    2. Stoops will not compete against his brother year in ans year out. Call me crazy but the more I learn about strong the more I like him he would be my #2
    3.agreed
    4. Agreed though I think it would be hard to pull him away
    5. No way fulmer comes back he was a great coach and I liked him while he was here but thays not gonna happen. I would have Roman at 5.
    Just my opinions

  • 1. Grudenhoffer
    2. Jimbo
    3. Fedora
    4. Strong
    5. Geez, I don't know. After Gruden and Fisher there's not much to sink your teeth into. The rest are definitely a gamble although in the past Les Miles, Nick Saban, Muschamp, Fisher and many others were gambles...coming in without HC experience, marginal W/L etc. We are in a pickle if we don't get Grude or Jimbo. (I'm assuming Stoops and Mora are not available. Plus you can carry on about Fulmer all you like, his resume is better than anyone on the list and certainly a lot better than those below Fisher on my list. Regardless who we hire, except for Gruden, we are going to have a group of fans become belligerent. Since that's the case it wouldn't offend me if we looked at Fulmer although I'd prefer Gruden or Fisher.

Fulmer would never be hired back, whether he could still coach or not. UT can't afford to brig back somebody who would divide the fan base. Need someone we will all (or most) get behind.

    1. Gruden

    3. Fisher
    4. Fedora
    5. Strong

Assuming Gundy, Stoops, and Patterson aren't happening.

  • My list is based on who I believe we have a legit shot at getting. This excludes, I believe, Stoops, Fisher, Mora for all the previously stated facts about their buyouts, desires to stay on the west coast, coaching at alma mater, etc. I put huge stock in winning every where you have been. The best predictor of future outcome is past behavior. (See Dooley)
    1. Gruden (obvious)
    2. Fedora (wins at every level)
    3. Jones (wins at every level)
    4. Golden (based on my belief/hope that Miami has been a swamp that has prevented him from winning)
    5. Strong (If you can't beat UConn and Syracuse with Teddy Bridgewater, and your previous seasons have been average, makes me nervous)
