In case I haven't been clear about Coach Martin.....

  • I don't really care about basketball but its got to be getting more and more difficult to argue with this guy's point each week.

Robert Hubbs and Jarnell Stokes disagree

No offense, but just because you bring in these elite players, you have to develop them. Stokes was "supposed" to be a future NBA player. He isn't close.

  • Uncle, Uncle Screw it, you guys go ahead and fire the Coach. I personally do not care anymore. Going to root for the basketball team to win games no matter who the coach is. It's basketball not rocket science. We don't have enough joes to win right now. That is not a fact Anybody can debate. We have a legit scoring guard on the way, and a nice set of returning players some of whom are getting valuable experience for next year. That does not matter though, fire the coach guys. No reason to debate this issue anymore. Tennessee is the place that fires coaches after all.

  • Tom Crean and IU fans would disagree. Crean walked into a mess and it took him a few years to rebuild that roster with his guys (granted they have done studs) and look where they are now. This team doesn't lack talent, just lacks the most important piece, a PG. Couple that with the loss of the team's leader in Maymon and the results speak for themselves. Don't get me wrong, the turnovers and missed free throws drive me crazy and have cost the Vols many a game, however the one thing your can't disagree with, there is marked improvement in several of the players and Martin has proven he can land the big recruit. If Martin can find him a PG, I think this team can be special in the next couple years. Now if that PG is found and the results are the same, I will begin to think about a change may be necessary, but until this happens I will continue to support Coach Martin and the Big Orange.

  • I like Cuonzo and want him to succeed, but I don't see anything that was said in the OP that is wrong. Cuonzo hasn't proven anything yet. I just don't see any kind of discipline on the floor and that goes back to coaching. I hope Cuonzo is here for a while, but I think he has done a less than spectacular job this year. Hopefully things will turn around and they can finish strong.

  • If we can't develop or bring in a true point guard or 2 then I fear next year will be better but still a huge disappointment to all VOL fans. Golden has to play at last year or better and Lopez or another player needs to step up for depth.

There's no way you can compare the IU situation to our situation. Well, I guess you can. You just did. It's just that they're not close. Crean was left with 8 walk ons and 3 scholarship players. Postseason ban.

He also coaches at a "blueblood" in a talent rich basketball crazy state where kids grow up loving IU basketball and want to play there.

Oh, and here's the other kicker....Crean has been to the NCAA before. Not only NCAA but also went to Final Four.

I disagree. The OP received 27 down votes for stating his opinion. Now the "lock" icon pops up. Why? Because y'all don't agree with him? The use of a lock is when a thread gets out of hand not because all of you gang up on one guys opinion. For the record our bball team is horrific. Say what you want to but this team stinks

I agree with you and the OP!! We all know it's true, most just don't want to admit it. I myself think Coach Martin is in over his head. Bash all you want but this is my opinion.

I haven't followed this poster or any other. Just from the outside looking in I seen one users opinion blasted. Now if he is a troll then by all means I am out of line but I know I have seen this username on this site posting non-trolling info/opinions.

As for have I forgotten about what it takes to be a winner( this is not at the user I quoted up top). No. I never said CM couldn't win or wouldn't. I just said this team is horrific to watch. That's all. Many of you agree but won't post it here with me. Rodbeazy and myself call each other after the games to vent. I want to see the Big Orange up top but I have gotten used to disappointment. I bleed orange as do my two sons and that will never change. Go Vols

Btw... This team is horrible to watch. This team needs a pure point guard in a bad way. I love Martin, but his downfall might be not recruiting a good pure point guard fast enough. Free throw shooting and injuries killed the season, but some of that could have been negated with a pure point guard. The offense is horrible...

As soon as it became clear that this year's team was going to underperform, I have since taken the stance that I'll judge Martin after next year. He's been our coach for 1.5 seasons, and here is how it has gone down:

In his first half season, the expectations were very low (11th in the SEC) and that's about where the team was (met expectations). In his second half, he finished second in the SEC behind the eventual national champions (significantly exceeded expectations). This the first half of this season, we all had really high hopes because of how last year finished, and they have underperformed - yes, the Maymon deal, but there is underperforming all around this team (below expectations). Assuming they finish this season at about the same pace they are on now, they will make the NIT which will be a disappointment and unmet expectations.

People concluding now that Martin can't get the job done are welcome to have that opinion, but I think they are jumping the gun. I think people at a football school have been spoiled by a very fast blink of success under Pearl, and had that confidence boosted by the way last year finished. Not saying that we shouldn't expect to win at Tennessee, just that we need to remember that Bruce Pearls don't grow on trees. That was an exception.

Then... 2013 is where we really find out what he can do. The 2013 team will be a very experienced, very talented roster. There will be two 5 stars, several four stars, and some really good role players. Other than Hubbs, the starting lineup will be all juniors and seniors. If Martin can't make the NCAA with that, and I would even say the Sweet 16, either something went very wrong (i.e., more injuries) or he's just not the guy. But I'm going to give him that chance. He needed a year to get players in to his system, and he's allowed one average year before we drop the hammer.

This is pretty much why I have stayed out of the Cuonzo can't coach threads. He's here at least thru next season.

The OP only posts stuff like this. Whenever anything positive happens, he's nowhere to be found. He doesn't post to foster debate, he posts to further his own agenda. There's a big difference between the two...

  • He did a good job with a bad roster last year.
The team is average this year. Some expected a lot more but with Maymon, nevertheless nationally this team was never ranked. .
If next years team goes to the tourney, he 100% stays. If they are a bubble team 75% and if not 50%.

UT basketball is like South Carolina football, a few good years doesn't mean the program is elite.
