Incentive based contract for Gruden

  • So why doesn't UT pony up with a contract that is heavily incentive based and heavily penalized for less than Grudenlike results. Hell give him 10 million a year for him and assistants as long as the are winning 10 games. Every game under 10 take a million out of Jon's pocket. Throw in a million for BCS championship game. Make it 10 years and every season with less than 10 years take a year away for every loss under 10. If the results come make the money better if they don't make it leave his pocket. The above terms are a joke but you guys get my point and idea. Thoughts?

  • No coach would agree to this

  • No agent would coaches are pretty confident individuals. I'm just saying to pay him well but to get the moon and the entire hill you gotta win. If you do it's yours if you don't leave that buyout at the doorsteps and leave. I want Gruden bad and think we should pay anything but gotta have some insurance on the back end just in case.

Agree GrudenVFL. Clearly the trend in college coaching is for much higher comp packages and to a large degree it's about what the "market will bear"; make no mistake, the agents will continue to push the envelope zealously advocating for their clients and enriching themselves in the process! Don't get me wrong, I'm all about free markets, but these deals are getting entirely too one-sided w/the universities left holding a big fat buyout with very little performance language, incentive terms, etc. I understand you get what you pay for, but there's gotta be some balance!

It wouldn't work because you're managing this from a silo. Gruden would have his pick of NFL jobs this year as well. It's not like we'd be competing against college level money. Gruden could get a lot money somewhere else and a lot of that money would be guaranteed. Would you rather have a contract that's guaranteed to pay you $10 million a year or one that might pay you $10 million?

No coach, even the most confident, would agree to have money taken away with losses.

Why would one agree to this w/o really being in the locker room with the guys and knowing them well? Sure, there's talent on the roster, but who's to say it's the talent the coach wants to run his system. It'd be one thing to agree to this after you've established yourself as a fantastic coach at a program (tho no coach would ever agree to such a contract) and another to take a gamble on like this with a team that's 4-7 with one game left to play, especially when you know you could definitely get over $6 mil w/no consequences for losing games.
