Is Fedora an up and comer?

  • IMO, if we don't land Gruden and with the fickleness of our fan base, wouldn't Hart be smarter just going after Fedora as the up and comer? Strong is not a guarantee and people aren't excited about him, and the same for Golden, therefore go cheap and see what Fedora can do, which is obviously something good since he's proved it as a Head Coach. IMO it's Fisher or Fedora without Gruden... Thoughts?

  • I'm not sure if Fedora would be cheap, but I could/would support him. He wins everywhere he goes, and has tutored under a great offensive mind in Gundy. Get him, and a super DCoord and let's go. I'm good with that.

I meant cheap in regards to Gruden ($5mil), Stoops ($5mil), or Fisher (currently at $2.75mil). I agree with you, offense is good, which we'll need losing our big 3, may have ties with Pittman from UNC, and just hire a good DC and it might be good. The only downside is that I don't think he'll put butts in seats until they show they can win games, which may be later than hoped for with games @ Oregon and @ UF. I like that he's young though.

  • Man I totally agree. Its Fisher, then Fedora. With either guy I'd be able to puke and rally after the Gruden bubble bust.

  • I like Fedora and think he'd be a great choice. But how do our fans reconcile stealing a coach from UNC after 1yr when we were all up in arms when Kiffin left after 1yr?

Not sure it would really bother me truly but just curious what others think.

If we hire a coach that gave up 68 points to a Georgia Tech team that got routed by Georgia, then we can expect to be the number two team in TN for a long time.

  • Fedora is a very good coach, people have a problem with the defenses he's had. My thoughts on that are, he's never been at a program with the resources UT has to get a great defensive staff. There was only one guy who could instantly unite the fan base and that was Gruden, and that seems unlikely right now, but honestly, I'd be good with Fedora + a great defensive staff.

Fisher got beat by the same NC St. team we beat, but Fla. St. is 10-2, does that make Fisher a bad coach? IMO, don't base a coaches capabilities on one game, but by his total body of work. Charlie Strong is supposed to be a defensive guru, and his team's defense was 1 point better on average than UNC's.

Man, I said the SAME thing. Also with Mora from UCLA. Funny how people can justify it, but still crucify Kiffin!

  • If u judge coaches by who they lose to then you'll never find a good coach. I mean saban lost to ul-Monroe

How about a coach that was 9 points from going 11-1 in the ACC this year? And a 42-23 overall record as a head coach? Assuming Gruden is off the block, please make a case for someone that is feasible...

The difference in this situation is that NCAA sanctions loom over the UNC program that Fedora didn't have a hand in, they could be severely handicapped in near future by the NCAA, IMO, that's why he would leave, same thing with Golden.

Fisher's team also had the 3rd ranked Defense in the Nation (he just has no clue when it comes to offense). Personally, I hope we hire neither one of them. In person, I watched Fisher's team run the ball for -15 yards against a horrid Virginia Tech defense. This was the same Virginia Tech defense that I watched (in person) get shredded by Gio Bernard and UNC. But it was Larry Fedora's defense that made Logan Thomas look like a Heisman contender too. If they were a package deal, I would be all for it. But one has no clue when it comes to offense and the other has no clue when it comes to defense. If we hire either one, we are going to need the best offensive or defensive coordinator in the nation. The SEC is a whole lot tougher than the ACC, I can't imagine what UGA would do to a Fedora defense considering UGA just beat the snot out of the same Georgia Tech team that ran up 68 points on his Tarheels.

  • I say stop the madness and go make a play for Fedora. Everything I've read about him is that he wins, he scores points, he's relatively young and his players like playing for him. Something else I will say regarding the comment earlier about losing the big three, you could make an argument that Bray would struggle with his motion spread offense whereas either Worley or Peterman would be better suited to run. Or, conversely you could say Fedora would struggle to run the type of offense he wants if Bray's his QB.

Granted Gruden is a short term HOME RUN hire but in 3-4 years is he still here or has he made a jump back to the NFL now that he's gotten back into coaching and knocked the rust off? On the flip side, if you hire Fedora he may not appease everyone who wanted a big name but what I think would get in return is a winning coach who could build a successful program while sticking here for the long term.

Ok, so no Fisher or Fedora for you, so who do you hire? Hard to read just negative thoughts with no solution.

I agree with part of this, but this was Fedora's first year at UNC, so some growing pains should be expected, but let's look at UGA for example, they struggled to beat us, but beat the crap out of Vandy or they Struggled with Kentucky, but we beat the crap out of Kentucky. You can't use one game to form your logic on any coach, heck Saban lost to UL Monroe in his first year at Bama.
